In a fairly major coup for DivX Networks, Apex Digital has announced that all of their upcoming 2005 product line will support DivX natively. I don’t know how that’s going to work for their televisions, say, but for items like portable video devices and DVD players it makes perfect sense. And as much as it pains me to say it, this is one instance where having a certifying body—even if it is a single corporation—really makes it easier. My DVD player supports Xvid, for instance, but only when encoded with certain versions and varieties of encoders. It plays almost every variety of DivX around without a hassle.
