Fourth Gen iPod on Apple Store

So Apple has put up the new iPod product page on the Apple Store, so if you had any lingering last doubt that the Newsweek leak was legitimate it can now be put to rest. As is my usual response to an Apple product launch, I was initially underwhelmed, but have started to warm to some of the ancillary changes (the primary change being the new iPod mini-like Click Wheel), like the one-click Shuffle Songs menu option and the extended battery life. And while that’s well and good, since I don’t plan on upgrading for the time being (my iPod is still in the shop, but will come back shiny and new, god willing), what I really want to know is if we’ll be seeing these changes to the 3rd generation iPods and iPod mini through a firmware update. (Thanks, everybody!)

Updates after the jump.

Update: Looks like we 3rd Gen (and previous) owners are out of luck. The internals of the new iPod are the same as the iPod mini, so the little one alone will get the upgrade. Hate on you, Apple.

Update Update: So I’m an idiot and misread the page. It looks like the iPod mini will not get the updated features after all. I blame this all on Phil Schiller, who is still mad about the time I dunked him at the Apple Press Water Polo party. (Thanks, Will!)
