Garmin says it will outbid TomTom for ownership of map provider Tele Atlas. Ironically, Garmin has always used data from Navteq, which is now being purchased by Nokia. Soooo Days of Our Lives. [Garmin]

DISCUSSION

Teleatlas maps have always been inferior to Navteq (at least in the US), so Garmin switching to them really isn't a good thing. Even if Teleatlas does update their maps, they still have a bad name which may come back and haunt Garmin with people picking other devices (Magellan comes to mind).

I think Garmin will have a hard time beating TomTom, both have heaps of cash, but keeping Teleatlas in Benelux hands may appeal to the shareholders over a buyout by a foreign company. TomTom's current bid is just EUR3 per share less than Garmin, so they still have plenty of wiggle room.
