Movie theaters have been packed with new releases lately, but there’s always room for a spectacular return. The next to get the 4K big-screen treatment is 1995’s Ghost in the Shell, directed by Mamoru Oshii, written by Kazunori Ito, and adapted from the 1989 manga by Masamune Shirow. It takes place in 2029, so we’ve almost caught up to the story, if not the technology it explores.
A new trailer is here to hype the 4K re-release:
“2029: A female cybernetic government agent, Major Motoko Kusanagi, and the Internal Bureau of Investigations are hot on the trail of ‘The Puppet Master,’ a mysterious and threatening computer virus capable of infiltrating human hosts,” reads the official synopsis. “Together with her fellow agents from Section 9, Kusanagi embarks on a high-tech race against time to capture the omnipresent entity. Director Mamoru Oshii’s award-winning cyber-tech thriller, based on the comic book by Masamune Shirow, has established itself as one of the leading Japanese animation films of all time.”
The voice cast includes Atsuko Tanaka, Akio Otsuka, Koichi Yamadera, and Tamio Oki.
