Surround sound headphones aren’t exactly new—I used to have an old set of quadraphonic headphones with two quarter-inch stereo jacks and four speakers—but they’ve come back into style with the advent of cheap surround sound sources (almost every DVD and videogame around). Trusted Reviews takes a set out called the HCT Portable Home Theater that manage to create a pretty decent simulation of surround sound using just two speakers and some delay voodoo. It’s not just the standard phase delay effect, either, but instead something that approximates proper 5.1 sound—there’s even an in-line Dolby Digital decoder that accepts optical input.
