HD DVD Expected to Get Some Hollywood Content

Reading time 1 minute

BusinessWeek is reporting that three Hollywood studios are expected to announce their intention to release at least some of their movies on Toshiba’s HD DVD next-generation optical disc format. Of course, the deal would not be an exclusive with HD DVD, meaning that their content could be released on Sony’s Blu-ray, as well.

We’re pretty much sold on Blu-ray’s dominance around here, as we talked about next week—and not because we are “teh bias” or “in the pocket of Sony,” despite the keenest insights of Slashdot noodlers—but at least this is a step in the right direction for Toshiba. Sony’s got a big leg up on content, which we see as a major advantage for them, but it could also scare some of the non-Sony-owned studios into trying to play both sides. (Thanks, Christopher!)
