Homespun $42 Wheelchairs

The Free Wheelchair Mission is an organization that aims to provide free wheelchairs to those in countries too poor to afford proper medical equipment. Inspired by the sight of a crippled Moroccan woman dragging herself across a dirt road (and a little old timey religion) inspired the mission’s founder Don Schoendorfer to develop a simply-designed wheelchair that combines a lawn chair, some steel tubing, and a couple of bicycle wheels to create a real wireless mobility device, all for about $42 worth of parts. Even better, the assembly plans for the wheelchair are freely available, and they encourage anyone to use them to create their own.

The Free Wheelchair Mission shipped 10,000 chairs in December.
