A mini desktop PC perfect for setting up a home office

A tower will take up a lot of room, all the room underneath your desk, and you’ll probably never even open it. A mini PC does the same job as a tower in about 1 liter of space. So it can fit behind your monitor, mounted to a VESA arm, or placed on a shelf where a tower wouldn’t fit. This is the main point of a mini PC and has driven many offices to switch from towers to mini PCs for years.

In a business environment, Windows 11 Pro matters because it includes BitLocker drive encryption, Remote Desktop access, the ability to join a domain, and Hyper-V virtualization. Windows 11 Home lacks these features, so if you buy a computer preloaded with Windows 11 Pro, you may save on a later upgrade fee when you need to connect the device to your company network or encrypt drives.

On the front of the unit, there is a single USB-C 3.1 Gen 2 port, a USB 3.1 Gen 2 port, a USB 3.1 Gen 1 port, and headphone and headset jacks. The rear of the unit also has four additional USB 3.1 ports, two DisplayPort 1.2 outputs, and a Gigabit Ethernet port. With this port selection, you can connect a printer, a scanner, an external drive, two monitors, and a wired network connection all at once.

The 256GB PCIe SSD is the reason your boot times land under ten seconds. However, storage that small fills up fast if you keep large files locally, though for a machine running Office, a browser, and a few business applications with everything else on a server or in the cloud, it’s enough.

The box includes a wired keyboard and mouse, so there’s nothing else you need to order to get it running. At $470 instead of $829, the HP Business Mini Desktop PC is a reasonable pick for a reception desk, your home office, or a second machine in a room where a tower would be in the way. Keep in mind that 8GB of RAM is where you’ll notice the limits first if you keep many browser tabs open alongside other applications.
