The most famous story of time travel and predestination is getting a movie adaptation, starring Ethan Hawke. Robert A. Heinlein’s “All You Zombies” features a guy whose very existence is a time paradox — but the movie looks like more of a gritty, noir-influenced thriller.

Above is the brand new international trailer for Predestination, from Peter Spierig and Michael Spierig, the Australian brothers who previously directed Hawke in the futuristic vampire film Daybreakers. Here’s an earlier trailer:

Predestination had its debut at SXSW back in March, and has gotten mixed reviews thus far. People have praised newcomer Sarah Snook, who plays both a man and a woman in the film, for a ground-breaking performance. But they also say it heaps on way too many twists and becomes unsustainably plot-heavy while also making no sense (like a lot of time travel movies, in other words.) The overall verdict seems to be that the movie has real heart, but doesn’t trust that heart and instead keeps lurching into being an uninspired thriller.

No clue when Predestination is coming out in the U.S. — some sources say early 2015. We’ll keep you posted.
