According the NPD Group research firm, Apple now holds 68 percent of the portable music player market with the iPod. And that’s not just hard disk-based players—they have an 82 percent share there—but includes flash-based players, as well. I doubt they included MP3 CD players in that mix, but even still, that’s seven out of ten players as iPods—and this Christmas I’ve heard projections that they expect to sell around 3 million more.

Update: MacMinute says the hard drive-based market is not 82 percent, but 92 percent. And of course, iTunes Music Store is doing well, too, with 70 percent of the legal download market.
