The first season of Lanterns ended exactly how it had to. John Stewart finally had the ring he’d been destined for his whole life. Things with his mentor, Hal Jordan, had been wrapped up. And we finally understood Stewart’s dynamic with Guy Gardner, Earth’s Green Lantern, whom we’d met in earlier DC stories.
What we didn’t get was the other moment John had been thinking about his whole life. The one he first thought of on his fifth birthday when his parents gave him the present, and later when he fed the alien plant Earl at Hal Jordan’s house. We’re talking about putting on an actual Green Lantern suit. And if Lanterns comes back for season two, that’s exactly what will happen.
“If the season would have continued on another day, you probably would have seen it,” co-showrunner Chris Mundy told CBR. “But emotionally in that moment, once Hal and John have their goodbye scene—the Halogram and John—the season had ended, emotionally. I know there’s the montage, and I know he flies. But to get to a place where he then had the suit would have taken us out of the moment between those guys. Once we knew that was the ending point, then we were like, ‘The suit’s not going to be in this season.’”
Mundy did confirm, however, that they did design a suit for John. We just didn’t see it. “In the early days, we did designs on Aaron’s suit at the same time that we did designs on Hal’s, on Kyle’s,” he said.
And while there’s still no word on whether Lanterns will return for season two (there are some other things happening at Warner Bros. at the moment) we do know that Aaron Pierre will reprise his role as John Stewart in James Gunn’s Man of Tomorrow. So, maybe we won’t have to wait for season two to see John’s suit. Maybe we’ll see it in theaters this upcoming summer.
All eight episodes of Lanterns are now streaming on HBO Max. Man of Tomorrow comes to theaters on July 9, 2027.
