JVC DLA-HD2K HD Projector

The first thing I look for when I see a product like this JVC DLA-HD2K is the price, because then I can estimate exactly how long the product reps will laugh in my face when I request a review unit. And let me tell you, an MSRP just short of $30,000 is a lot of laughing—they’ll probably pee a little.

But sheesh, what a nice looking projector! Using the same Liquid Crystal on Silicon (LCOS) technology that Intel just bailed on, the rear-projection unit as a native 1,920 by 1,080 pixel resolution—that’s called HD around these parts. They also say it’s the ‘smallest and lightest HD projector in the industry,” and that’s sort of true, but they’re also sort of bullshitting us, too, because even though the projection unit is really small, the video processor has been off-loaded to an outboard box that can be up to 45 meters away from the projector itself. That’s actually a pretty decent idea for something like this—it has always sketched me out to mount these giant, fragile HD projectors to ceilings, so any weight loss is welcome.

Expect to see these in your boss’s lake house early next month.
