LaCie 1.6TB Bigger Disk Extreme

When you’re giving the pros and cons of a 1.6TB (terabyte) hard disk array, like the LaCie Bigger Disk Extreme, and the only con is “bulky,” then you’re probably doing pretty good by my estimation. As a follow up to previous Bigger Disk external storage drives, there’s no question the 1.6TB version is impressive, smashing together four 400GB drives into a single array that requires no special drivers to be used in Windows XP or Mac OSX. And it looks sufficiently swanky, too, if aluminum doesn’t grate on you.

Sysadmins and those in search of links: inside.

LaCie also says they are offering a 19-inch rackmount kit for the drive, but looking at the picture, doesn’t it look like you could get way more in a two-inch rack than just a single unit? I’m thinking two, at least, if not four. Might be a down and dirty way to make a cheap SAN, albeit one without proper hot-swapping and RAID >0 and all that good stuff.
