M-Audio is taking on Line 6 with the ‘Black Box,’ a guitar amp modeler that also servers as a low-rent drum machine, microphone preamp, and an audio interface to Macs or PCs. If you haven’t used this sort of thing before, it’s essentially a solid-state emulation of various guitar effects and amplifiers, allowing you to dial up classic sounds of yesteryear for authentic-sounding noodling. At $330, it isn’t cheap (surprisingly, considering M-Audio’s typical affordable pricing), but if it can do everything it purports to well, it could be a one-stop shop for at-home guitar musicians.
