M¼-Card: Yet Another Memory Card Format

By

Reading time 1 minute

When I rolled out of floor this morning I thought, “Golly, I hope there’s yet another ass-eating memory card format to talk about today!” My prayers were met with a double blessing it seems, as a Taiwanese technology consortium not only announced a new format, but named it something that required me to look up an HTML entity—You are my sunshine, M¼-Card.

There is a single hope for this ‘micro ¼ card,’ which is that the group developing it is trying to make the new format compatible with both SD and MMC memory cards (which despite being seen together, are technically separate platforms). If the high-speed format—and that’s really the only benefit they seem to be claiming; that M¼-Card is faster than ever USB 2.0—actually is adopted by the SD/MMC teams, it could just be a good expansion move for everyone. Instead of developing separate software for SDIO applications, the M¼-Cards would basically be USB devices in a new format.
