Big buffer goes around the world, big buffer underground, or at least that’s the old-time religion Maxtor is spinning with their new SATA MaXLine III, a new series of 250GB and 300GB hard drives with a whopping 16MB buffer, as well as other SATA II features like native command queuing (trust me, it’s good). But the buffer, that’s the big money, since you’ll see real world performance increases from a bigger buffer in a lot bigger way than even faster interconnects like SATA or ATA/133 can offer on their own. Maxtor says big buffer is just for corporate power right now, but we’ll see it tumble down our way soon enough.
