McDonald’s grasps for relevance with a new pilot program in its Denver stores that will allow customers to rent DVDs for just $1 a day via kiosks placed in each of its 105 area stores. While they plan to only carry the top 30 DVD titles (which account for 80% of rentals, they say), the DVDs can be returned to any McDonalds with a kiosk. There is potential here, if adopted across all its national stores, to be able to rent a DVD at one McDonald’s while on a trip and drop it off hundreds of miles away when you’re done, something that to my knowledge has never been practical to do before (you can drop Netflix in the mail from wherever, but not pick them up new DVDs). (Thanks, John!)
