Microsoft has been eyeing the automotive market for nigh-on a decade at this point and finally their investments may start to pay off in products that might actually be useful. Fiat, for instance, has just announced a long-term strategic partnership, which in and of itself isn’t that spectacular, but some of their ideas, if they come to fruition, sound pretty great: Bluetooth sync of contacts and address book information; easy USB hookups for accessing MP3 players; integrated cellular service (this is pretty common these days, but a broader standard would be nice). It’s the sort of design philosophy that I can really get behind; I don’t want my car to be able to do everything. I just want it to be able to talk to all my other gadgets. (Thanks, Nicolai!)
