A consortium of wireless providers and tech giants, including Microsoft, Vodafone, and Sun, is asking ICANN to coin a new top-level domain name for mobile sites: .mob. They claim it would make it easier for them to create sites specifically tailored for on-the-go Web surfers. Could the Gambinos, like Tuvalu (of .tv fame) before them, stand to make a mint if they can claim ownership of the TLDN? A much better racket than shaking down the coat-check room at Scores, to be sure.
