The bloody violence of 'Mortal Kombat 2' made money, but got overwhelmed by fashionable devils and musical icons.

The big movie of the weekend was Mortal Kombat II, and despite its best efforts, it was no match for Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway.

Per the Hollywood Reporter, the video game movie made $63 million worldwide, with $40 million of that coming from the domestic market. Internationally, its $23 million take can be owed to two things: it’s not out everywhere in the world yet, and it was overwhelmed by the one-two punch of The Devil Wears Prada 2 and Michael. Both of those have hit big overseas, and in Devil got an extra North American boost thanks to it being Mother’s Day. Warner Bros. already has threequel on the brain, but it’s anyone’s guess how the film ultimately does theatrically with two juggernauts currently out there.

Or maybe instead of Mortal Kombat II, you went to see the weekend’s other new release, The Sheep DetectivesPeople saw a trailer about talking sheep trying to find who killed Hugh Jackman, and that’s resulted in a $28 million global box office. Despite coming in fourth behind the movies mentioned above, Sheep Detectives has gotten a strong reception from critics and audiences alike, so word of mouth may help it in the weeks ahead. You hear a premise like this that’s so delightfully strange, how can you not be a little curious?

Mortal Kombat II and Sheep Detectives help fill out a busy month. Before The Mandalorian and Grogu comes out on May 22 and does…however it does against Passenger and I Love Boosters, we’ve got Obsession and Is God Is on May 15. Things come to a close with Backrooms on May 29, and then Masters of the Universe and Scary Movie 6 usher in the new month on June 5.
