Motorola’s smart car cam

Motorola is working on special “smart” video cameras for cars that help drivers stay on the road and parallel park:

Motorola places its camera behind the rearview mirror or the headlights to provide the computer with a clear view of the road. Hopkins said a computer linked to a camera, using a powerful computer processor and sector-processing software, automatically maps out curbs, trees and lane markings… When a car starts to swerve from the lane — perhaps as a fatigued driver dozes off or is distracted — the system can sound an “audible ding” or send a vibration to the steering wheel or the driver’s seat alerting the driver to get back in his lane… Hopkins said systems using cameras will be available in the next year or two to detect blind spots, assist in parallel parking and read traffic signs.
