Iomega introduces exciting new desktop hard drive product lines today, according to their exciting press release. I’m not exactly sure where the exciting part is; they look pretty much like your run-of-the-mill external hard drives available from dozens of manufacturers in USB 2.0 and FireWire, although the backup / disaster recovery software might make up for the inflated price.
Prices are generally over $1.00 per gig even for the low end USB-only variety. The Iomega USB 2.0 / FireWire 400 @ 250GB is $279; Western Digital offers an identical dual-option 250 gigger for $240, and I built a 250 FireWire 400 at home for around $150. So maybe these new drives aren’t so exciting after all, unless you get excited about spending too much money.
