In sort of an end to an era, PalmOne will be shutting down its Palm.Net internet service, subscriptions to which have fallen to just around 42,000 users over the last coupel of years as wireless data services from mobile carriers have eclipsed the five year-old service in both speed and coverage area. The Palm.Net email accounts will be moved over to USA.net, but the Palm VII, VIIx and i705 Palm handhelds will not be supported by USA.net, as they are Palm.Net-only devices.
Palm.Net was one of the fire wireless data networks in wide use, albeit at now-trickling speeds of around 9Kbps. Expect the service to be shut down by the end of the month.
