Panasonic Oxyride Batteries Last Twice as Long, But Do We Care?

Panasonic is now offering Oxyride batteries in the US. Ok. Fine. Oxyride is an update on the standard Alkaline batteries that we in New York buy for a dollar on the train and which end up strewn on the tracks like so many CD player turds. If Oxyride really does last longer, I suppose that is a good thing. But at what point are we going create a rechargable standard that makes sense? The only reason you'd want to use disposable batteries is because you don't want 50 chargers in your laptop bag when you go to Atlantic City for a "business conference." Maybe everyone could just use Nokia's ubiquitous chargers and then we can do away with the whole disposable battery thing completely.
