Details are slim — I couldn’t even find a picture, although I’m sure there’s not much to see— but Philips is pushing a new 16x DVD writer into the market that supports the Dual Layer standard. Although the news is clocking the burner at around six minutes per disc, I suspect that rate is only for single-layer DVDs. The 8.5-gigabyte dual layer burners from other manufacturers have been benchmarking much more slowly, in the 20 to 30 minute range for a single disc. Cost estimates are around $200-220 for consumers, and Dell is slated to recieve the first batch. Still, fast, like a cheetah, or a monkey on a cheetah. (Thanks, Jos!)
