Ron Livingston, Uber-nerd

By

Reading time 1 minute

So I actually walked by the subway ads for the upcoming Brittany Murphy/Ron Livingston pic ‘Little Black Book’ without once realizing that she was plucking a Palm from his pocket instead of, you know, a book. I even went so far as to think about how silly it was that they would base a movie around something that men haven’t used in decades, maybe in the sequel they go hunting for the perfect shoe tree, ha ha, get it those are old. But Om Malik used his real human eyes to spot the Palm Tungsten used in the ads (and another one with a keyboard) and makes a very good point: if Ron Livingston’s character meticulously cataloged his love life, with pictures and stories and everything into his Palm, doesn’t that sort of make him a big nerd?

In fact, if you think about it, Livingston has a lot of nerd going for him. He popularized video hockey in Swingers, championed cheap bourbon and maps in Band of Brothers, and played the ultimate vengeful nerd in Office Space. Then he gets to be a sort of Studs Urkel in Little Black Book, where hopefully at the end he dumps the snooping Murphy and hooks back up with the foreign model, leaving Murphy alone to press newsprint into the skin of her lips like Silly Putty.

Oh, and did you notice how they are using Friendster to promote this thing? It’s like the multi-million dollar ad campaign really gets me!
