Samsung Pushes TV Phones at Cannes

By

Reading time 1 minute

As 3GSM burns on in Cannes, a lot of companies are trying to push their product as the intersection of phones and television without much promise. But Samsung continues is showing off the interesting Anycall, featuring a small landscape screen that comes out of the left side to show clear—if postage stamp sized—live TV. Plus a speaker base designed for the phone to dock with so you can actually hear Japanese people yell at you. But the real trick here is when you run an AV cable from the phone to, say, a 50-inch plasma screen. Who needs a coat hanger and tinfoil when you’ve got a cellphone?

While the Anycall is fun, it’s short on style. Good thing then that Samsung also brought the SGH-Z130, a candybar with swivel screen that is just as appealing as the first time we saw it. Never mind the wide range of music files it can handle (MP3, AAC, and AAC+) or the 4x digital zoom camera capable of capturing stills or video, the large swivel screen can show Real Player streams in landscape format without having to twist your phone around into something like a deformed Autobot. It’s anyone’s guess if we’ll see these in North America. For now, just know they’re out there.
