Video games have only been getting bigger and bigger, year after year—especially in the AAA space. With Grand Theft Auto VI finally coming out later this year, you’re going to want to make some room on your PlayStation 5’s internal storage. Seriously, this game is going to be massive. There is a non-zero chance that GTA 6’s install size clocks in over 200GB. The PS5 only launched with 825GB of useable space for games. What you can do is move all your other games onto a portable drive so you still have them on standby when you want to play them, but now have room for however large the new GTA ends up being.
The SanDisk Extreme Game Drive for PlayStation 5 comes with a full 1TB of storage, and right now Best Buys lists that it has it for $86 off. That brings it from $336 to just $250 for a limited time.
Now, even though this is listed at $86 off, that’s not the full story. This PlayStation 5 SanDisk Extreme Game Drive SSD launched last year for $130. Thanks to AI companies gobbling up all the storage drives, consumer prices have skyrocketed in 2026. So Best Buy’s list price of $336 is way inflated compared to what it should be, but now it’s down to $250. That’s still nearly double what it launched at, but that’s just the reality of shopping for SSDs in this day and age.
There are two ways to expand your PlayStation 5 storage capacity. One is by installing an additional internal SSD. This requires removing the chassis to get to the innards of your console. The benefit though is you can play every PS5 game directly from the drive. Once its installed, you don’t have to think about it again—just enjoy the expanded storage space.
Portable Game Drive
That’s not the case though with this drive, unfortunately. This SSD can only store games, it cannot play them. Think of it like a digital storage shelf for your games. When it comes time you want to play one of the games stored on it, you can plug it into your PS5 and then move that game over. This is far faster than re-downloading the game each time, plus you can take the games with you over to a friend’s house to play on their console. Additionally, this doesn’t required removing the outer casing of your PS5 like the internal option. Just plug it into one of the available USB ports on the front or back of the system.
