The Sony WH-1000XM6 is Sony’s flagship wireless noise-canceling over-ear headphone, released in May 2025 as the successor to the WH-1000XM5. The QN3 HD Noise Canceling Processor runs 7 times faster than the previous generation’s chip, optimizing 12 microphones in real time for what Sony rates as its most effective noise cancellation. Battery life is 30 hours with active noise cancellation on. Bluetooth 5.3 supports LDAC for high-resolution wireless audio, plus multipoint pairing for switching between two devices.
Fantastic over-the-ear headphones with bombastic sound
Noise cancellation is the reason Sony’s WH-1000 series has dominated the flagship headphone category since 2016. The XM6 continues that trend with a new HD Noise Canceling Processor QN3, which runs 7 times faster than the QN1 chip in the XM5 and coordinates 12 total microphones to cancel out ambient sound. Adaptive NC Optimizer also adjusts the cancellation in real time based on your environment, whether you’re on a plane, in an office, or walking down a busy sidewalk.
The XM6’s sound quality comes from a redesigned driver with a carbon-fiber composite dome, tuned in collaboration with mastering audio engineers. Vocals stay clean, the low end has weight without muddiness, and the treble stays sharp without becoming harsh. A 3.5mm cable also plugs directly into the headphones for lossless wired listening when battery isn’t a concern.
The XM6 delivers 30 hours of battery life with ANC active, extending to 40 hours with ANC off. A full charge from empty takes about 3.5 hours through the USB-C port on the bottom of the right earcup. Sony added music-while-charging support to the XM6 for the first time on the flagship line. A 3-minute quick charge with a USB-PD adapter also delivers 3 hours of playback if you’re heading out the door with low batteries.
The Sony Sound Connect app on your phone unlocks a 10-band equalizer, Gaming EQ preset, Cinema Mode for spatial audio during movies and shows, and personalized noise cancellation profiles. AI beamforming across 6 microphones isolates your voice from background noise during calls, useful for taking work calls from a café, an airport, or a public transit ride. A tap on either earcup also mutes the microphone during a call.
Sony has kept the WH-1000 series positioned at the top of the flagship noise-canceling category since the WH-1000XM3 arrived in 2018. The XM6 brings the biggest updates to the line since the XM4 refresh, with the QN3 processor, carbon fiber drivers, and Cinema Mode as the main additions. At $398, down from $460, the discount takes over $60 off the list price. If you travel often, work in an open office, or want the latest noise-cancellation technology Sony offers, this drops the entry price on the current generation.
