The 60th anniversary of Star Trek arrives September 8, marking the date the show debuted back in 1966. The future of the sci-fi mainstay may be in flux, but there’s still plenty to look back on and enjoy. As you’d expect, a host of screenings are planned in celebration, but there are also some more offbeat tie-ins on the calendar, including themed episodes of game shows Let’s Make a Deal (which has actually been around even longer than Star Trek) and The Price Is Right.
However, the quirkiest event is happening at London’s Science Museum, where fans will gather to set a Guinness World Record for the most people performing the Vulcan Salute.
According to the museum’s website, where you can find more details about how to sign up if you’re planning to attend, the record-setting attempt will take place as part of Star Trek Lates, an after-hours event that will also let you tour the venue’s Star Trek Warp Trail, featuring an array of costumes and props. (If you’re not local to London, you can still add your Vulcan Salute to the tally by participating online.)
It would be highly illogical if the Vulcan Salute gathering were the only event planned for Star Trek Day, so the official Star Trek website has posted a worldwide round-up. Other than watching the current season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, the most accessible way to join the fun is heading to one of 750 theaters across the U.S. that are screening classic Star Trek films in 4K alongside curated episodes of Star Trek: The Original Series.
Those screenings run from September 4-8, with collectible U.S.S. Enterprise popcorn buckets to go with them (of course). Here’s the line-up:
Friday, Sept. 4 – Star Trek: The Motion Picture – The Director’s Edition with “The Changeling”
Saturday, Sept. 5 – Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan – The Director’s Cut with “Space Seed”
Sunday, Sept. 6 – Star Trek III: The Search for Spock with “Amok Time”
Monday, Sept. 7 – Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home with “The City on the Edge of Forever”
Tuesday, Sept. 8 – Star Trek Day Marathon featuring all four film-and-episode pairings.
And for the game-show junkies among us, those special episodes of Let’s Make a Deal and The Price Is Right will hit CBS on September 8 (they’ll also stream on Paramount+), featuring appearances by Strange New Worlds stars Rebecca Romijn and, in keeping with the Vulcan theme, Ethan Peck.
