It’s the 1980s! Some observant folks have pointed out that the opening notes of this trailer’s score sound like Cocoon. Will there be a friendly alien along with an evil alien?
The film is a tribute to Spielberg… so here’s our quintessentially Spielbergian hero, riding his bike!
A pickup truck collides with a train, as we saw in the teaser trailer ages ago.
The whole thing goes boom…
The train goes flying up in the air!
In all the confusion, our main character drops his Super 8 camera. He’ll need it later.
Here’s our guy running through the flames. He nearly gets squashed by a flying truck.
Some… thing… bursts out of the US Air Force trailer on the train.
And it looks like our hero is there to watch it bust out.
Soldiers are trying to clearcut an area with flamethrowers. Or maybe it’s HYDRA.
A ton of soldiers, who look like they’re trying to make a perimeter.
All of the cars in the used car lot come to life. Are they Transformers?
This is the Deputy Sheriff, and I’m guessing he’s the main character’s father from the way we see them hugging later. If this is a Spielberg riff, it would make sense to have a father-son storyline.
The Army is evacuating people.
Elle Fanning watches as the main character films stuff with his Super 8.
The Deputy Sheriff sees something horrifying.
Houses start blowing up…
And there’s the Deputy Sheriff hugging the kid. I’m willing to be they’re father and son.
The whole of the cute 1980s downtown is blowing all to hell.
Some poor convenience store guy is getting pulled backwards by some massive suction.
You know what might help you avoid getting sucked into an alien vortex? Crisco! Not really.
Two people are holding hands. Romance blossing? Dad and son again?
A military truck goes flying upwards…
…and it looks like the soldiers are getting sucked out, just like that guy in the convenience store.
People freaking out.
Now suburbia is on fire!
but our guy is still filming with his Super 8 camera. As a voiceover tells us that if he says anything to anybody about what he’s seen, he’s dead.
