Taser International did a study, the methodology of which seems a bit tepid, in my home town, Columbus, Ohio—Love that Borden Butter Cow! The study showed that the use of stun guns has prevented 14 potentially deadly-force incidents and that 12 of the incidents were directly related to suicide attempts—in Columbus, they don’t go for that touchy feely “Let’s talk ’em down, Sarge” stuff. There was also a 25% drop from citizen complaints about excessive force during Taser use (??). Perhaps their teeth were chattering too much?
When the compilers of the study wanted to mention the negative aspects of stunning, including the rare but real chance of heart attack, they were dropped with a good jolt an told to keep quiet.
