In the changelog of today's iOS 5.1 update, there was vague mention of a new network indicator on the AT&T iPhone 4S. Shortly after, a reader sent us a screen of his phone displaying the 4G icon along the top. And once we got iOS 5.1 installed on an AT&T iPhone 4S of our own, we saw the same thing.

As you may know, the 14.4mbps HSPA+ connection of the AT&T iPhone 4S is fast enough for AT&T to legally call it 4G. Be that as it may, we're still of the opinion that HSPA+ is FauxG, and not worthy of the same classification given to WiMax and LTE. [Thanks, Terry!]

DISCUSSION

Okay, that's borderline false advertising... however I would like it to say 3G and 3G+ when I actually get the faster connection speeds. An indicator as to the current throughput or possible throughput would be awesome.
