Not content with a new TV series on the CW, a newly redesigned and shockingly excellent comic relaunch, fighting zombies, Predators and Sharknados, and all the other ways he and his Riverdale pals are conquering the entertainment world, Archie will also get a Broadway musical with help from Anchorman’s Adam McKay.
From the press release:
Writer/Director Adam McKay (Anchorman, Talladega Nights, You’re Welcome America) and Funny Or Die have joined forces with Archie Comics, one of the most popular comics ever produced, to bringArchie, Betty, Veronica, Jughead and the Riverdale gang to Broadway in an all-new musical. McKay is slated to bring his singular brand of comedy to the musical, writing the book for the show, with a creative team and timing for a New York run to be announced at a later date. ...
Adam McKay said, “Archie represents a bygone era of America. And like all bygone eras, there are elements we miss and elements that should be bygone. This will be a musical that deals with both those realities in a bright, colorful and slightly demented way.”
The days where we could make fun of Archie—either the comic or company—as being old or stale are long over. The company is putting out some great comics besides the outstanding new Archie from Mark Waid and Fiona Staples, including the superhero noir The Black Hood and the literally satanic relaunch of Sabrina the Teenage Witch—while not taking themselves so seriously they won’t let Predator rip Archie’s pal Jughead’s spine out of his back.
At any rate, I’m excited for the CW show, and I’d sure as hell give an Archie comedy-musical a shot.
