This idea is so crazy that it just might work. UPDATE: The idea was sound, but you can no longer order a Kindle 1.

The theory: Stephen Windwalker, who has written books for the Kindle, has said that those who are still waiting for their first gen Kindle will receive and offer to upgrade their order to the new Kindle for a 10% price increase.

The plan: Get in line for a Kindle 2 now by ordering a Kindle 1 before the press conference this morning, then just upgrading your order to a Kindle 2 whenever Amazon contacts you about it.

What could go wrong: Well, Windwalker could be mistaken and Amazon won’t actually make that offer to shoppers. Also, the speculated 10% price increase would put the Kindle 2 over its leaked retail price of $359—in the ballpark of $400.

But if you don’t want to wait in line for your Kindle 2, these possible hazards of speculative ordering can always be countered by a simple order cancellation or return. [Stephen Windwalker via Slashgear]

UPDATE: It looks like the original Kindle ordering page is down since the Kindle 2 was announced, but all Kindle 1 orders will be fulfilled with Kindle 2s. Nice Amazon!
