After last week’s near-miss asteroid encounter, along with a very definite asteroid hit over Russia, scientists and government workers are buzzing with questions about what can be done to protect humanity from blazing-fast balls of rock from space. We already have some pretty good ideas about what could be done to detect asteroids early, and some spacecraft are already exploring NEOs or near-Earth objects, to see how easy it is to nudge them out of a collision course with our planet. But the billion-dollar question isn’t about the science. It’s about politics. Who should step up and coordinate our whole-Earth effort to stop asteroids before they strike?
