Body Composition Monitors are getting more widespread, and this one, the Total Innerscan, gives some evidence as to why. For around $260, you get a bathroom scale which measures not only your weight but also your visercal fat rating, bone mass, basal metabolic rate, muscle mass, and percentages of body fat and water (amongst other things). If you're anything like me, products like this represent a perfect opportunity to not only believe you're a lazy lard hauler, but to back that belief up with scientific data. If only it had prerecorded messages like, "Lay off the ham, butterbreath." Especially if it followed up with, "Just kidding. Here's some delicious ham."
