Hotmail used to let you access it using Outlook or Outlook Express—that was one of the reasons I used to use them exclusively about four years ago. Now a couple of readers have told me that their free access to Hotmail from Outlook has been suspended, with a message encouraging them to upgrade to MSN Hotmail Plus for $20 a year. That seems like an odd move at this point, especially since Gmail just started offering POP3 service for free.

And to top it off, a couple of users sent me screenshots yesterday of some strange behavior when they logged into their Hotmail accounts. Whatever it was, it must have been smushed quickly, because after about 5:30 yesterday I stopped hearing about it. You can take a look at the screenshot if you want.
