If I've learned two things in life, it's that it's noble to jump on some bandwagons, and some things just look sexy in red. That's why I was pretty happy to see that Microsoft and Dell were joining the (Product) Red charity for global AIDS relief, and that for every one of the sweet new red XPS One's that are sold, $80 of the purchase will go directly toward buying 6 months of antiretroviral medication. If you buy a (Product) Red XPS M1530 or M1330, the donation is $50, and if you buy the red 948 all-in-one printer, somebody gets 10 days' worth of medication. Some of you are skeptical about this program—tell me, don't you think these numbers prove that (Product) Red is working? Jump for details and more Red-ified product pics. [Dell]

Dell and Microsoft will announce later this week that they will offer customers a simple way to make a difference, through the purchase of unique (PRODUCT) RED branded personal computers and a printer. Adding to the premium experience, all Dell (PRODUCT) RED PCs are powered by Windows Vista Ultimate (PRODUCT) RED, that include six unique desktop wallpapers, a screensaver, two innovative Windows Sidebar gadgets and a (RED)-themed Windows DreamScene. Dell is the exclusive PC and peripheral partner of (PRODUCT) RED.• When a consumer chooses either laptop - the XPS M1530 (PRODUCT) RED or XPS M1330 (PRODUCT) RED with Windows Vista Ultimate (PRODUCT) RED (starting price $1,149 for either laptop) - Dell and Windows will make a total joint contribution of $50 directly to the Global Fund, which buys nearly 4 months of lifesaving antiretroviral medication.
• When a consumer chooses the XPS One (PRODUCT) RED with Windows Vista Ultimate (PRODUCT) RED (starting price of $1,599), Dell and Windows will make a total contribution of $80 directly to the Global Fund, which buys 6 months of lifesaving antiretroviral medication.
• When a consumer chooses the 948 All-in-one (PRODUCT) RED Printer (starting price of $149), Dell will make a $5 contribution to the Global Fund, which buys more than ten days of lifesaving antiretroviral medication.

what about pink for valentine's day?..pink is a shade of red?..
oooh news about microsoft! does that go with today's advertising scheme? i think tomorrow should be an HD-DVD day, with nothing but good news about HD-DVD.
...for people who already own this product, and want to contribute to RED, there should be a service for (maybe) sending in the equipment, and getting in painted, or some type of body kit.
Do the same process of dividing what will go to service and what will be donated.
Will certainly receive even more money for a worthy cause.
Being in the red never looked so good.
product red Zune in the future?
whats ironic is that is the color of blood
They need to donate more. Period.
@blacksamurai87: How much are they donating now? This whole thing is a marketing scheme anyway to get us to feel less guilt about investing in selfish luxuries.
Probably a more worthy (or feasible) endeavor than OLPC given some of the recent developments.
I'm doing HIV research--for a cure. Just give me the money.
Regardless of donations, that red XPS has to be about the prettiest all-in-one PC ever.
Damn, that red XPS one is sexy.
The One's still fugly, but I wouldn't kick that M1330 off of my desk.
@sisedi: Its entirely marketing. If a company was truly philanthropic they would offer to donate percentages of all products, not just off a special line. Furthermore, while I appreciate the initiative to contribute to such a worthy cause, they could be contributing significantly more than a meager 5% of each sale with this program. This is Dell and Microsoft we're talking about here. Its not like they can't afford 10% or more.
@kodo: but its like the Livestrong bracelet. It allows someone to spend just a tiny bit more and then advertise to everyone else how awesome they are.
I STILL see people wearing their $1 Livestrong bracelets years later. Awesome, you bought a $1 bracelet 2 years ago that had a portion going to a cause. I shall call you Mr. Philanthropy.
@kodo: So much anger floating around here for doing some charity!
@kodo: marketing is everything. Running special campaigns boosts awareness and contributions far more than having a long, ongoing campaign. 5% of gross is actually a pretty good percentage - more than Ben and Jerry's donates in their 1% for peace program. And lest you forget, Dell is in the business of making money for shareholders. Sure, everyone could do more, but you have to give credit when someone does something other than criticize.
@Lavallee017: microsoft really needs to. the RED iPod nano is selling like hotcakes, maybe a RED zune would put the zune back on the map. of course, so would making the zune a better-fit competitor to the iPod, but microsoft has its shortcomings. and im not an apple fanboy before anyone starts flaming, i have a PC and an xbox 360 i'm defintely not all that anti-MS.
and, that XPS one looks mighty good in red. dell just needs to hook us up with a matching multimedia keyboard and mouse, and it'll have the iMac beat in all corners of the ring except for the OS X diehards out there.
That's one COOL looking display! Love the stand and connectors! What is Apple doing?!
@Digital Freak: Thats not a display... thats Dell's All-in-one computer.
@Lavallee017: Red Zune is on the way. I guess the article is right. It was a bad time to introduce it. You must have missed this: [gizmodo.com]
OMG that's massively hideous expanse of glossy red paint/plastic. And how does the printer only get away with the surround on the control panel and a tiny "(DELL)RED" logo? I guess that's why it's only worth a $5 donation...
@weatherman: Actually the effectiveness is dependent largely on the product itself. Ben & Jerry's 1% may very well accrue more because the product (ice cream) is something that consumers purchase frequently and repeatedly over time. Even if that percentage amount doesn't initially seem very large, the longevity of the campaign and the wider consumer base will lend considerably larger gains. A computer has a more limited market - proportionally, there are significantly fewer people looking to buy a new computer. I do agree with you in that at least 5% is something.
Everything in the (PRODUCT)RED scheme looks better. And I love the naming concept. (DELL)RED looks sweet.
@kodo: Yes. I didn't mean to suggest that Dell would end up donating more than Ben & Jerry. I was just comparing % of gross. Obviously this isn't on everything that Dell sells, only on these particular Red products, so even though it's a high-value product (one XPS system is equivalent to about 400 pints of ice cream) it's probably not going to amount to as much as 1% of all of the ice cream sold all the time.
RED is good.
so is PINK and YELLOW...
howabout... CAMO!!
Dell and Microsoft will announce later this week that they will offer customers a simple way to make a difference, through the purchase of unique (PRODUCT) CAMO branded personal computers and a printer.
Every purchase directs funds to support the recovery of all the poor fucked up kids returning from Iraq and other Terrorist Shooting Locations.
Who buy's dell or windows??? Mac baby ^_^
Wow, that Red One sure is perty!
