Bose has been making noise cancelling headphones longer than Apple has been making headphones at all, and right now the Bose QuietComfort is $229 on Amazon, down from its regular $349, a 34% cut that puts it at less than half the price of AirPods Max ($549). That gap is hard to ignore when both headphones are targeting the same use case: long flights, open offices, and anywhere you need the outside world to stop existing for a while.

The headphone that defined what noise cancelling should sound like

Bose’s QuietComfort line has been the reference point for active noise cancellation in over-ear headphones for years, and the current generation holds that position. The ANC combines active noise cancellation technology with passive sound isolation from the over-ear cushions, so it handles both the low rumble of airplane engines and the sharper frequencies of open-plan office chatter without leaving gaps. Two listening modes let you switch between full noise cancellation and an aware mode that pipes in ambient sound when you need to catch what someone is saying without taking the headphones off, which is the kind of real-world detail that matters more than spec sheets suggest.

The plush over-ear cushions are built for extended wear. Most people start feeling pressure from on-ear headphones after an hour or two, especially during travel, and the QuietComfort’s padded headband and soft ear cups are specifically designed to avoid that. Battery runs up to 24 hours on a single charge, which covers a transatlantic flight with hours to spare, and a 15-minute USB-C top-up adds another 2.5 hours if you forget to charge before leaving. The included audio cable means you can still use them wired when the battery runs out entirely, which is something AirPods Max can’t do in the same way.

Multipoint Bluetooth lets the headphones stay connected to two devices at once, so switching from your laptop to your phone during a call doesn’t require going into settings and manually disconnecting. The Bose app handles EQ adjustments if you want to tune the bass, mids, and treble to your taste, and it pushes software updates to keep the firmware current over time.

AirPods Max will cost you $549. The Bose QuietComfort at $229 saves you $320 and delivers noise cancellation from a brand that was engineering this technology before Apple entered the audio hardware market. With over 19,000 reviews at 4.6 stars, the track record is there. The blue limited edition color is a detail but it’s a good-looking one, and at $120 off the regular price it’s the right time to pick it up if you’ve been sitting on the fence.
