The Nokia N96 Super Cellphone is Official: Gallery and Specs Here

The N96 is pretty similar to the Symbian 60-powered N95 we've all come to recognize as Nokia's 5MP GPS finest, but with 16GB of internal memory and a 2.8-inch screen. This model also has a built-in DVB-H receiver for digital TV signals in Europe and Asia, and a kickstand for desktop viewing. Also new are the backlit touchbuttons on the face, dialpad and top slider section of the phone. When playing media, they show the typical play/pause/ff/rr functions; when gaming on the N-Gage gaming platform, they show control pad buttons. Approx $800, but likely no US 3G support.

Nokia N96: The one to watch Most advanced multimedia computer optimized for entertainment Mobile World Congress 2008, Barcelona, Spain/Espoo, Finland - Nokia today unveiled the Nokia N96, a multimedia computer truly optimized for video and TV. With a large 2.8" screen, 16 gigabytes of internal memory and support for high-quality videos in a wide range of formats, the dual-slide Nokia N96 represents an exciting new chapter in mobile media. The Nokia N96 multimedia computer is expected to begin shipping in the third quarter of 2008 with an estimated sales price of approximately 550 euros, before subsidies or taxes. "In 2007, the Nokia N95 became an icon of convergence of Internet and mobility. With over 7 million units sold to date, the N95 has changed the way people use their mobile device. The Nokia N96 we introduced today builds on the success of N95, further enhancing the experience," says Jonas Geust, who oversees Nokia's Explore category. "Through the power of the Internet, video and TV are becoming even more prevalent in people's lives. With its large, bright screen, and a range of high-speed connectivity options and the enhanced Nokia Video Center, the new Nokia N96 is a personal window to entertainment." Accessing internet videos is quick and simple. The Nokia N96 supports common video formats including MPEG-4, Windows Media Video and Flash Video, making favorite videos easy to view. Transferring and accessing videos is even faster with the high-speed USB 2.0 connection and WLAN and HSDPA support. In select markets, the integrated DVB-H receiver offers live broadcast TV with an automatically updating program guide. The massive memory can store up to 40 hours of video content. The storage capacity of the Nokia N96 can even be further expanded with an optional microSD card, such as the new Nokia 8GB microSDHC Card MU-43 which increases the available memory of the Nokia N96 to a total of 24 GB. For added convenience, the Nokia N96 features a 'kickstand' on the back cover that allows for hands-free viewing. The Nokia Video Center offers one place to discover and access a variety of mobile content ranging from movie trailers and comedy to news from world-leading content brands such as YouTube, Reuters, and Sony Pictures. The catalogue of internet video feeds is continually expanded with more regional and country specific content. For a superb music experience, the Nokia N96 features media keys, a 3.5 mm headphone connector and built-in 3D stereo speakers. The Nokia Maps application offers richer maps with urban details and satellite views and has upgrade options such as City Guides, turn-by-turn pedestrian mode and voice-guided car navigation. The Nokia N96 boasts a 5 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics, flash and video light. It allows DVD-like quality video capture at 30 frames per second. Further, with the integrated A-GPS, consumers can now 'geotag' their pictures with location data and share them with their online communities. • iPhone upgrade deja vu, anyone?

  • @NightBlade:
Because the iPhone upgrade also had a 5mpix camera, GPS and built-in TV receiver?

Note that it says the N95 has sold 7 million units. That means that the N95 has sold more than the iPhone. I repeat: Nokia has sold more N95's than Apple has sold iPhones. That must shatter many people's worlds!

"With over 7 million units sold to date"

Is that worldwide? I also wonder if it's as much of a brick as my old N80. I used to hate putting that thing in my pocket and having the sliding mechanism open up while walking. I don't even wear tight pants, either. Next thing I knew, my ass would be activating the mp3 player or calling friends to let them know what my jeans sounded like.

  • @Kim98:
What I meant is that the upgrade isn't too stunning...

  • Yet another nice phone. However I wonder if I am the only one that prefers a clamp shell phone. I am sick and tired of always ending up with a really cool phone, full of scratches on the display.

  • dogone it i just got an n95!!

  • Image of johnnyabnormal johnnyabnormal at 05:29 AM on 02/11/08 *

@Kim98: It doesn't shatter mine. The iPhone hasn't even been out for a year and is grabbing market share at a very fast rate. Also take into account that they only offered it with certain carriers in limited countries...it's actually quite impressive. I could care less if they outsold everyone as long as it stimulates great products from all manufactures in competition.

  • wow that thing looks sexy

  • This is NOT an upgrade of N95.

  • @johnnyabnormal:
Oh I agree that it's great how the iPhone has woken people up to the importance of the user experience and the "cool"-factor of the device. And definitely things have started happening at a faster pace thanks to it.

However the "fast rate" of sale is what I was disputing. The N95 has not been out much longer than the iPhone (the N95 has been on sale since the end of March 2007 - the iPhone since June 2007) and it's clearly outselling the iPhone.

The fact that Apple hasn't brought the iPhone to more markets is their own failing and that's a factor to the poor worldwide sales more than it is a reason to excuse Apple for it.

The reason I brought this up was that you often see people say "the iPhone has sold more than any other model ever" on Gizmodo (paraphrased), which is completely false. The Nokia N73, for example, has sold 15 million units in a year and a half. The N95, we now know, has sold 7 million in less than a year. Both exceed the iPhone, which has sales that have slowed down to a crawl in Europe. The N95 on the other hand doesn't seem to be slowing but rather speeding up!

  • @rospaya:
Nokia is sort-of positioning it as being an upgrade to the N95. If you watched the keynote speech that just ended a moment ago, they showed it next to the N95 and said "the N96 is like a turbo-charged N95".

  • remember, the 7 million sold is mainly europ and the rest of the world not the U.S as they just introduced it in the U.S
funny it was giz that reported the sales but nokia itself... Imagin if that was the iPhone, can u imagin the headline: "apple iPhone takes over world"
Shame its gonna take another year and a half for the phone to reach the U.S.
Gimodo is a huge website with millions of viewer outside the U.S so more worldwide base when reporting figurs please

long live Nokia and Symbian .....oh and the iphone 3G with featurs close to the N96 when it comes out. I review phones and sell them so at least i get my hands on the all

  • But does it call?

  • @Johnnyabnormal: come on, every know u r an iphone funboy... But that shouldnt stop u giving credit when ts due. the iphone is grabbing marketshare...in the U.S mobilephone market with crappy phones, even RIM dont sell outside the U.S... Nokia is hardly in that maket. n95 sold 7million in 10-11 months. The iphone is great and am glad its making the likes of Nokia be more productive but it will never do as well as the N95, appple is looking to sell 10million iPhone by the end of 2008 that a year and 6 months.

Gizmodo and the iphone lovers should look at things in a worldwide perspective befor making crazy claims like the iphone grabing marketshare... yes they are ...In the U.S

  • if the iphone was available to more countries and cariers im sure it would hav outsold the n95!but the fact tht apple doesnt allow you to install apps and shit is a real turn off!!
and i would want a phone tht would keep me connected to my pc via 3.5g(sadly US uses different band, bad luck u guys) intsead of old and retired edge!

  • Image of johnnyabnormal johnnyabnormal at 06:09 AM on 02/11/08 *

@Kim98: Yeah, I think some people get their numbers mixed up pretty easily. I bet if iPhones were unlocked GSM, 3G with Flash support & had iChat they would have sold a lot better. Then again, I don't even want to imagine what they'd charge for it not going through a carrier. I got the 4GB version when it came out and have loved it. I was getting pretty sick of my Euro Unlocked N80 at the time and gave it to my wife. (hahaha) Then I got her a iPhone for xmas since it was glitching on her too often. After using OSX on a phone I feel spoiled...I don't know if I'd go back to Nokia even if they came out with something twice as good as the N95.

  • Image of johnnyabnormal johnnyabnormal at 06:13 AM on 02/11/08 *

@The Full English Please!!: "Funboy"? Hahaha. I'm not even a fanboy. I'm quick to point out the weaknesses of the iPhone. I'm also quick to diss the latest "fartbook" that came out. Talk about a disappointment! All companies screw up. I still haven't forgiven Apple for screwing up so hard with Logic Pro for the past 4 years.

  • OMG would people just stop comparing every friggen phone with the iPhone! >< any bladdy mobile company has a bigger friggen mobile reach than stupid apple with it's single iPhone or the new upgraded one! Yet again the iPhone ain't selling as amazingly in european markets because the friggen phones are better anyway! Eish

  • @johnnyabnormal: cool, i let u off, but u do realise u turned this Nokia product launch into an iphone thing again..

The iPhone is great no one can challage the fun in using it, the only prais real praise i would personally give the iphone it the fact that when its time to upgrade my Nokia E90 (which i use for absolutly everything in my Uni life) to the next version, its gonna be kickass.
Then buy the next version of the 3G iphone to compliment my nect nokia Communicator as both an ipod upgrade and to carry my second number.. Cos right now i carry my E90 (main soon to be just 3GB of data only sim a month for £15) S.E p990 (work) and my ipod.

  • I own an N95 8GB and I agree that this is NOT an upgrade but a downgrade. One of the most important reason people buy a high-end phone is status symbol. It is my main reason for buying a high-end phone.

If you own an N95 why on earth would you buy something that looks exactly the same as N81? There's something wrong with Nokia's Martketing team. Specs are secondary. Besides, other brands would have products whose specs are more or less the same.

A product has to differentiate, and NOT looking like a downgrade.

  • XPERIA FTW. :p

  • @ celloids

    quote:

"One of the most important reason people buy a high-end phone is status symbol. It is my main reason for buying a high-end phone."

    Small dick much?

  • Super? With no 3G? I think not. Why the heck would they built an amazingly cool phone and not make it 3G? especially after all the crap Apple has taken for not making the iphone 3G.

  • @DJTRIPLERRR :

The iphone doesn't sell in Europe because we gave laws against market domination , because they only sell it in france, germany and the UK and because europe exists of more than alone those three countries. Even if everybody American seems to think otherwise. AAAAND: nobody over here is stupid enough to spend 999 euros on an unlocked iphone.

  • @hagrun: I didn't see anything about it not having 3G. It just said no US 3G support (yet). It'll probably come out as a US version sometime after the initial Euro launch.

I wonder if they'll remove/modify the TV-Tuner for the US version.

I like that it has 16GB of built in storage AND a microSD card slot.

  • @hagrun: It is 3G, just not North American 3G

  • oh man, if only the first NGage was this sweet

gonna have a hard time between this and the XPERIA

  • @celloids: wait are u saying tht n95 looks better than n81 or the n96?
almost every nowadays loves shiny glossy gadgets!!
the only reason tht kept me from buying an n81 over an n95 was the specs!n95 looks like a freaking tv remote compare to this!

"So much in love with shiny new toys, it's unnatural"

  • N95 available worlwide, unlocked option available = 7m sales
iPhone what? 3 countries? NOT available unlocked need hax!(mine is haxored outside us, muahahaha) = 4m .. is not so bad..

The thing here is.. my iPhone is getting pwnd by many GPS enabled cellphones :( and with Flash lite too..

iPhone 2.0 .. needs GPS and Flash lite! please!! Jobso!! i will buy a MacBook Air but you promise to release GPS and flash in the iphone.. mmkay!!

  • @hagrun: There will inevitably be a North american version with US 3G, just as there was with the N95.

  • @johnnyabnormal: The North Amrican N95 was out here for less time than the iphone.

  • @nidinp: And you don't think the fact that the N95 was unsibsidized becasue it has no carrier isn't a barrier? And it still sells like crazy.

  • Funny how the iPhone is "barely" selling in Europe compared to the N95 but yet, it's the iPhone that's generating "unheard-of levels of mobile Internet usage," according to Vivek Dev, COO of Telefónica O2 Europe.

What exactly are people using the N95 for? Or is it simply because of data plans available for the iPhone?

I used to be an S60 fanboy. Being able to install apps seemed great at first, but the situation is hardly perfect in the S60 world. After frustration with the app situation, namely that some apps would run on my N80, some would crash it, some wouldn't install, etc, I gave up. And the lack of 3G in the US felt like a snub by Nokia too.

  • What's wrong with this being an upgrade to the N95?

The N95 is an amazing phone and this improves it. End of story.

Since when have upgrades been a bad thing (apart from for people who just bought the old version)?

  • um. Why no Xenon flash?

  • @ERIKISLAME: I am talking about gadgets as in real gadgets. Not your kinda gadget. If you want to talk about those silly gadget of yours, go and chat to some under-aged teens. It may be your passion to talk about such things, but I am not interested in those.

  • Image of johnnyabnormal johnnyabnormal at 01:37 PM on 02/11/08 *

@Zlevee: Very true. I had to get my old N80 in Europe beacuse it wasn't in the USA for so long. I'm pretty sure that 7 mill is a worldwide number, or we'd see more Americans running around with them.

  • @Erikislame
    He he, pwned.
It's a lovely phone, and has far more features than an iPhone, so yeah, gotta start saving!

  • it's an amazing phone.

so sorry that colloid doesnt get to feel like a power sex god owning one!

  • Leave all those iphone vs Nokia wars.Well,to anyone who still dreams of iphone picking up sales,I tell you iphone has lost it's charm. With no 3g,2mp cam and other outdates(rather than updates!)Apple should think of a second version. But the painful thing being that Nokia, the king in handset world cannot make a single phone that is ergonomic, has better program memory(boots faster, seldom hangs...),faster processor, better battery and better OS.That is where Apple has proved it's worth. It's time the mobile world giant concentrate on basics rather than make others go for Apples and SEs.As far as N96 is concerned I dont have any big expectations.Nokia has simply lost it's way.

  • only thing cool about it is built in 16gb plus microSD card slot (8gb) has the most available space out there i think.. 24gb

  • These Nokia phones aren't even touchscreen?
    Next.

  • Ok, so I am a huge Apple fan; however I am also willing to say that the limitations on the iPhone keep it bound. The Nokia N-96 blows the iPhone out of the water. With expansion capabilities, GPS, and DVD quality video, the iPhone does not come close. As far as sales, the iPhone is on sale internationally. For example, it is sold in Australia on T-Mobile. So the whole "iPhone hasn't sold as much because of the fact that is only sold here on AT&T is lame." Also anybody with half a brain can figure out how to buy the iPhone and unlock it. I did and hated it.

  • The nokia n96 is not even a touch screen :O

  • @rdawes26:

    Wolf in sheep's clothing??

Your posts start out by saying how big of a fan your are of Apple, then you trash Apple by comparing their products to Nokia phones that cost twice as much.

BTW, the iPhone is not sold in Australia yet. The iPhone's screen is both larger and higher resolution than the N96, the N96 is 45% thicker than the iPhone, iPhone has better battery life, better browser and media player, more RAM and virtual memory. I could keep going, but I think you get the point. Oh yeah, the N96 does have an FM radio (if you purchase an antenna separately), 3G, and GPS (which the new iPhone will have shortly). Not sure what a huge Apple fan would be doing purchasing a Nokia that costs twice as much and blows, relatively, that is. Don't get me wrong, I think the N96 is an awesome phone, but to say that it blows the iPhone out of the water is a huge misstatement.

  • quick queston. Does any one know how the us 3g network compares to that of europe? I mean I have a locked at&t phone that boasts its 3g network and it sucks. its no faster than my n95 (unlocked) with web browsing or downloading utube or anything. very slow. also has anyone figured out a way to use features like video(other than the one way) calling or push to talk with the n96 or n95 or any unlocked phone period? I have at&t they will give me no support for the unlocked phone, its like i crossed over to the darkside or something they treat me like i have a pandemic or something. so I cant make wap purchases from there media net site. that sucks. but if any one has any info it is greatly apreciated. Oh yeah since every ones on the war I wish I could take the features of both iphone and nokia and make a even better one. they both have significant pros and cons that effect users greatly.
