Playing with Xperia, Sony's Windows Mobile phone with a hiptop QWERTY, revealed a few interesting things:
• The brushed steel finish wasn't shabby.
• Keyboard play was nice, even if clicks weren't as satisfying as those on a gummy Hiptop QWERTY.
• The demo only went as far as the 3D skin; anything beyond that plunged you into the depths of typical Windows Mobile-ness.
• The API for the 3D tile UI will be opened later on.
• Those icons are like the mini windows you'd see when switching windows in Vista or OS X's Expose. But on this tiny high res screen, they're impossible to read.
• The screen is not exactly brilliant, but I believe the Sony Ericsson booth could have all its phones brightness turned down to extend battery life on the busy show floor.
• It's cool, but because of the underlying OS, I wouldn't call it a killer of anything, let alone an iPhone.

Comments
The skin seemed much more sluggish than in SE's prepared video(ad?). Maybe they don't have the video drivers fully worked out yet either...
From the controlled nature of the demo it looks like the software isn't quite ready. Still the spec sheet on this thing is absolutely killer.
Any word on battery life/specs?
They said they were working on stabilising the platform, so that would explain the sluggishness of the visuals (although I think it looks fine). They are obviously still working on it.
I really want one of these. I was after an HTC Cruise, but this just blows that away!
Screw this thing, guys. The dude was so proud, and rightfully so...and then I asked to see the dialpad and he shrunk away from that. It was the stock winmo dialpad.
@Brian Lam: So the only cool thing about it is the windows? You're right, screw this.
@Blam, seems like he didn't show the WinMo dialpad cause everybody's seen in a billion times. Yeah, WinMo sucks, but if you're taking the phone in the context of WinMo phones in general, this looks pretty damn sweet.
Unrelated, I've said it before, but I'll say it again: "Actually" is the person trying to sound smart's version of "Like".
DO WANT, but after much revision and hopefully having a less sluggish version of WM.
was this even a full functioning OS? I don't see any reason he wouldn't show Lam the dial bad...Lame
I like it.
@Brian Lam: And the Windows Mobile dialpad sucks why? I have an iPhone and have had WinMo phones before...the dialpad is pretty much the fucking same thing on any phone no?
" It's cool, but because of the underlying OS, I wouldn't call it a killer of anything, let alone an iPhone."
Oh please! You guys wouldn't dare call it the "killer" of you precious iPhone no matter what
Windows Mobile, despite the garbage that some people seems to push, is a perfectly fine OS. One that has thousands of apps and much more flexibility than Giz's favorite iTotalitarian platform.
And you don't need hacks and other tricks in order to get this stuff on there.
But hey, it's all about protecting Apple from competition, right?
WinMo?
Dear SE Gods, WHY
@mobilehavoc: Only if you fail to consider the lag tie-outs and beach-ball-of-doom that sometimes occurs when trying to access it. Or any of the functions. Or the message that you cannot "activate the dial pad" because there's no enough free memory, and then you have to go to your start menu, then to activities manager, then quit out programs that you aren't using any more, like solitaire, the recent program list, the camera, the picture folder, etc., and then go back to your home screen and activate the dial pad.
It's pretty much the same other than that.
What does the screen look like if you have fewer than 9 windows/apps open? Are there just black holes?
Is it just me or does it seem that every gadget blog is in a competition to produce the worst videos ever?
By the way this device looks sweet!
What is this? Cloverfield 2? Use a tripod!
Besides that, I've become a HTC/winMo addict. I would switch to this in an instant if it had actual GPS as opposed to 'assisted'.
Neight is a recovering TyTN II whore.
great job on the video. takes me back to the 90's, a simpler time when the worse thing coming out of washington was a little lying under oath and the worse thing coming out of hollywood was the blair witch project...
oh, glory days!
it's got touch screen, it plays music, it plays movies, it surfs the web. it's an iphone ripoff!!!
*cough* sarcasm for apple fanboys *cough*
Is it Windows Mobile Professional 6.0 or 6.1 ?
Any confirmation about the battery ? 1350? 1500? :)
Hardware graphics acceleration DRIVERS ? *wink*
nice phone, shame about the os
Nice phone, but that dude needs a manicure and the camera man needs to lay off the crack.
theres a few more months left, I'm going to ditch the w960 and wait for this one.
If SE was looking for a quick fix, they should've taken the underlying CE stack and developed a ENTIRE GUI instead of just one Panel Application. But I guess they were looking for an even quicker fix from their Symbian/UIQ debacle
@nachobel:
Probably because MS has been pimping WinMo7 behind closed doors... and that is what this will be based on (my guess).
Is this slated to be the successor to the P1? I have to say that I love my P1 although it is missing a few items that I think this phone addresses: Quad Band and GPS. Other than that I would say that the P1 comes near to perfection as a phone. This one also looks to be about the same size as the P1 judging by how it fits in the hand, which is nice. Too bad it runs windows mobile; although with the numbers of 3rd party apps available for windows mobile, it may be a step in the right direction. I love the Symbian OS, however UIQ3 has been severely lacking in the available applications. I have owned every phone in the p-series (except for the P990 opting instead for a M600 then a Blackjack) and all have been exceptional phones, this one looks not to disappoint as well.
This is supposed to be out 2H 2008, so I think they have some time to flesh out the UI between now and then. Even without a flashy UI, though, this would easily be the best WM phone: WVGA screen, pretty compact, extremely sexy, plus it actually supports 3G on all bands, including t-mobile's.
LOL, when Brian asked if he can touch it, the Indian guy said "No, you can't," but Brian went ahead and touched it anyways. Oh man, that was funny.
Hmm... pretty nice IMO.
It's interesting though that it has actually come to a point where dialing isn't a feature worth showing anymore.
The reason why cellphones exists. :P
Also, remember kids: Don't discard the products only because you didn't like the guy who was presenting it.
Nice skin on top of Windows, but it really bothers me when engineers or marketers talk about putting a "user experience" on top of their products.
User experience isn't something you paint on afterwards, it is the entire experience of using the product, from the way the keys feel, to every part of the OS, to the quality of the speaker.
I did appreciate the thought that went into placing the icons in an arc for one-handed use. The human hand was meant for that kind of movement, something the iPod click wheel designers understood, but which was lost in the iPhone.
One good design decision does not make a product, however. Looks like more corporate compromises from Sony Ericsson.
This video made me sick and I threw up a little and now I need to pay down. The phone looks very nice, though.
@ BRIAN LAM
Are you serious, "Screw this thing, guys," because the windows mobile phone has a windows mobile dial pad?
Maybe you weren't aware, WM lets users install stuff on their phones, like custom dial pads.
Please explain your comment.
SAYCH the PCgamer a hole sez: "it's got touch screen, it plays music, it plays movies, it surfs the web. it's an iphone ripoff!!!"
*cough* sarcasm for apple fanboys *cough*
Apple "fanboys" rarely visit this PC gamer loser site.
Too bad all the true iphone "killers" are over $500 and not available in the states with carrier discounts...
PERMISSIONMAG sez:
User experience isn't something you paint on afterwards, it is the entire experience of using the product, from the way the keys feel, to every part of the OS, to the quality of the speaker.
This site exists to sell 3rd rate Microsoft so-called technology to gamer/suckers. A little bit of flash, that sorta looks like an Apple product, is all that's needed to get the suckers hard.
SO aGPS is worse than lets say a bluetooth GPS SIRF 3 ?
Been trying to look it up but cant find anything.
Also,my M600i is sweet,but this thing is a lot sweet-er-rer.
Getting one if the price is right.
when is this coming out.
I trade in my HTC Touch for one of these
@Brian Lam:
Is the keyboard comparable to those UX series UMPCs from Sony? same tactile feel and back light..
I'm also curious if it has TV out
@skurtis.1:
I think this is in a different line to the P series so therefore not a p1 succesor.
Also the p51 is semi-confirmed to have different feature set and remain on UIQ(again confirming that these are for different demographics)
Also the X series is not tied down to an OS according to reports, so the next X series may well just be UIQ again or something else.
IMO, this phone isn't too different to the p1i apart from the OS and screen resolution.
I'm wondering if the keyboard is backlit, and what the hell aGPS means. Is it worse than normal GPS??? If it is, I may not get this phone and stick with my HTC TyTn II. The only main reason I want this phone and selling mine is the gorgeous 3" screen with the awesome resolution, the headphone jack, the (probably smaller and lighter) design, the 3d games (Damn you HTC for no driver support) and the higher resolution camera (FM radio is nice, but I wouldn't use it, and I have my Zune 80 for that)
@hofodude: in the video the guys says its a 1400mah battery. so not too bad.
I'm enthralled. I want to make sweet love to this phone.
do you know that HTC made it? (it reminds me a remark of "tawanese made" of some days ago about the HTC shift)
take a look
[www.engadget.com]
It kinda bugs me that the new higher end phones don't have a sliding cover over the camera...
Sony-E should put the Danger OS on that :)
Very very lovely phone. WM6. 800x480. Pure sweetness.
Open to 3rd party software!!!! WOOT!
I wan't one.
@Brian Lam: why screw it? because win-mo will allow SE to change the dial pad when they get the full-Ui working? because you can install apps without jail breaking the phone?
or because it does not have a shiny apple on the back?
very unbecoming comments mr lam.... lets just say i feel very let down.
Having owned, and returned, a phone made by HTC, I would have to see if the phone had a video chip or video driver that did NOT rely on software rendering.
Try watching a video on the Tilt... Nuff said.
HTC lost my business due to lousy video performance. I don't care if it says HTC, Sony, AT&T... I want a performing smartphone.
