The Street Says Mac Users are Snobs, PC Users are Cheapskates

The Street is running a new video that cites research from Mindset Media, which pretty much says Mac users are "snobs." The company surveyed 7500 Mac and PC owners, and what they found seems ok for the most part... until they talk about the five pair of sneakers.

Apparently, Mac fanboys and fangirls are perfectionists, more likely to use teeth whitening products, notebooks over desktop computers, drive station wagons and/or hybrid cars, pay for downloaded music, visit Starbucks frequently. The study also says that Mac users are environmentally conscious and have purchased five pairs of sneakers in the last year. For some reason. Whatever. [The Street via TUAW]

  • I like how mac users are supposedly green even though apple is one of the worst companies for the environment

  • Station wagons suck.

  • What does it say about those of us with both? Honestly, the only reason i still use the PC is because you can't do everything with Mac, despite what the fanboys will have you believe.

  • cheapskates huh? saven money, reading reviews and putting in the effort to get the best and we are now cheapskates huh. right.

  • God, I hate how smug those Mac users are. I don't remember the link, but there's that one Penny Arcade that sums it up nicely.

  • @Husher: calling pc users cheapskates is part of the "im better than you"

  • Theres a difference between cheap and realistic. Realistically, if 90 percent of the market has laptops hundreds of dollars cheaper than a Mac, then Mac is the expensive one and PCs are realistic. I mean cmon, 2800 bucks for a 17" laptop are you fucking kidding me?!

  • Of course they're more satisfied with their Macs, because if they weren't then they would have to admit that they made a bad purchasing decision and then they won't be able to use their computer purchase as a way to be elitist.

  • @daversW: one of the worst companies? not really... maybe you could say one of the worst computer companies, but saying companies in general, defiantly not lol

  • I'm sure that I guess that it makes it official being that they surveyed 7500 people. I'm glad though, cause the ones that do show up in the survey are pretentious, self-absorbed yuppies blathering about their over-designed pieces of plastic and their supreme master Jobs... Funnily enough, the very thing his highness Jobs (and Woz) DIDN'T create apple for!

Eric Cartman - "Mac users, mac users... they want to save the world but all they do is smoke pot and play frisbee!"

  • @daftrok:
exactly, because they are so self-centered, they will rational their decision of purchasing a mac even though they aren't happy with it..and because macs are overpriced, it will make them think "it is expensive, it has to be good."

  • @Lizard_King:
    Exactly...
What does it say about those of us with both? Honestly, the only reason i still use the Mac is because you can't do everything with a PC, despite what the fanboys will have you believe.

  • this is a bunch of bull everybody isnt an asshole or a cheapskate, some people like macs and some will pay the price, some dont think is worth paying that much for any computer mac or pc some cant afford a certain price but that doesnt make them a cheapskate. so people may not be able to afford 1200 for a laptop when they can get one for 500 or 600 hundred or pay 500 for a mac mini then buy stuff like a monitor and etc. while they could get a windows pc for the same price which do you think a person will choose the mac pc or the windows pc

You dont know and cant know how how people go mac or pc unless you have too indentical products at the same price point.

lets see apple release a full system for 500 add a monitor to mac mini and see how things will be when they do that we'll see if its the price that people like or dont like or is it the OS

and where talking about average people not geeks, nerds and fanboys

  • cheap? i wish someone would tell that to intel and ati. i dont mind being called cheap but at least let me reap the benefits

  • time for a foodfight!

  • ..? is it ok if I really don't care about someone's survey? After all if you're a geek or a nerd you've already got a bias one way or another on this...

  • @daftrok:

Yeah totally! for $2800 you should get, like, a 40 inch laptop!

    What is Apple thinking?!?

  • You know. Ive been reading Giz for 2 years now and it took this article to get me to register. I think most MAC users are a bunch of B*tch *sses. I own an old G4 that i paid 200 for. I cant see my self selling my left Nut to pay $3000 for some skinny POS that cant ever burn a cd. No wonder people boot leg software. They cant afford it cause all their money went to the Comp it self.

  • I guess im not the average mac user then. I got my MacBook Pro because I got tired of having to go to a company computer when my clients used mac fonts. Slowly but surely windows has been left in the cold by me. Leopard sucks btw Tiger for the win.

Also when i bought it it was cheaper then any computer I could have bought from Dell, due to a bunch of circumstances. First the high Canadian dollar(it was at 90) when I bought it saved me money, being a student I got an ipod which I sold and 200 dollars off. I saved close to 600 dollars on it.

Now admittedly the only reason I bought it was because it was truly the strongest computer for the dollar at the time, if I were to purchase another computer in the future, and they have a good verson of mac os on it( and not the leopard bullshit) I would pick it up over any windows vista or xp machine.

Just a little side note, calling the mac overpriced I think is complete BS. Once I purchased it I kept on finding things with the hardware which surprised me for a week after. The magsafe connector is amazing. The power adaptor i believe has the best cord management, and with the travel adapter and home adapter it blows any powercord I ever had away(kinda wierd to say, but its attention to detail) Also the battery status indicator on the bottom of the battery is the coolest way I have seen it presented(looks kinda futuristic). And the first time you move your macbook pro from a room with lots of light to a low light environment you will shit your pants if you dont know whats coming. The whole screen goes dim and the keyboard lights up all pretty. Its apples attention to detail in the hardware which I think makes it worth the 400 dollars or so extra you would pay for the base model of the macbook pro.

  • I am the superioriest, running linux on my G5!

  • @ppeetteeyy: sorry i meant electronics companies... although they are getting a bit better

  • @daversW: cite a source other than Greenpeace please. If you cant then please post "Im a douchbag Greenpeace idiot" so we all know to ignore your future posts.

  • @tangledweb16: Wow. You didnt twist his message around at all, huh?

  • @tangledweb16: For about that much you can get maybe a 28-30 inch monitor, no, I'm not kidding.

  • Contest:

Guess how many of the above posters haven't yet hit puberty.

  • PC users aren't cheapskates they just make better decisions with their money. It is true that Mac users think they are all high and mighty though.

  • Shocking ... did they mention that they are also geriatics? When I'm traveling, I see more AARP members with Apple products than any other demographic.

  • @genius74: TOUCHE'!

We all have our reason for using whatever, some reasons are actually valid too! I like to think that this survey says I'm a cheapskate AND a pretentious asshole, it gets me the best of both worlds.

  • Make this research count only for the US of A, as in Europe assholes as cheapskates use PCs only.

  • Oh man, they have me pegged down as a Mac user, oy! Except for the credit card debt for fashion, I don't like to carry a balance. But I have to wonder what I'd be using if Apple wasn't the industry standard in my field for so long, what if I kept that IBM PS/2 in 1992. If PC fans weren't so smug about being the popular machine for so long, Mac users would have no reason to be smug back.

  • MACS are made for idiots that don't know anything about computers. I like for my stuff to actually work. MACS make me want to punch things. Nothing else does that.
I wish that MAC users would just shut the fuck up.

  • Thanks for stereotyping people.

So I guess that mean over 93% of the world is cheapskates. Yeah right.

I think we're all Bozos on this bus.

  • I think this is targeted towards regular non-geeks who buy macs because they look prettier and they don't bother you with alerts. I have friends who use Safari just because it doesn't tell them that it blocked a popup, even though Firefox's alerts can be disabled. Another one of my friends use Safari because it has rounded edges. Their argument is that the Mac looks "so beautiful", in which I claim that they could make their Windows computer look exactly the same. However, they want it to "come looking pretty" and not have to "make it look pretty".

Reason people are arrogant? Macs are more expensive, hinting at higher social class. As a result, people buy Macs for the WRONG REASON. They buy it because it makes them look good, makes their "computing experience" look prettier. They think that they are a small population, so they bond together in arrogance. I've seen Mac users complain about their old Windows computers being slow. Then they claimed that their old computers didn't run as fast as their new Mac: NO DUH your computers were 7 years old, obviously they won't run better than a new Core 2 Duo. People like me who argue the benefits of Windows computers only because of ignorant Mac users. I don't prefer Windows nor do I favour Macs, and I appreciate those who use both or know the advantages of both. Only ignorant people would claim that one can do everything better than the other.

Of course I expect to be flamed by certain people who will say that I'm ignorant because I'm ignoring some valid reasons of buying a mac: because it looks prettier, it feels better etc. No I'm not saying that- you can buy sports cars without understanding what they are. However, sports cars are well known to be prestigious. Macs are not supposed to be known as a more prestigious brand, because you can't judge computers the same way we judge other products.

  • What rubbish. If PC's were so overpriced I'm sure cheapskates wouldn't use them.

  • Sometimes I wonder if the people who so openly stereotype those with different technology buying habits also stereotype people based upon race, gender, religion, etc. Seems to me that if you can't respect/tolerate someone else's personal technology choices you're more apt to not respect their other life choices. Healthy debate on the benefits of one product/technology over another is great but keep it at the feature level - don't make personal attacks. Satire and sarcasm are funny but there's a thin line between funny and mean.

  • I'm cheap and I'm proud! Honestly, you don't get wealthy with poor money management skills.

  • In the video it says mac users are liberal and they will pay more for environmentally friendly products. I am a long time mac user and I am probably the most conservative person I know.

  • I've heard that blogs and gadget sites are going to be more expensive in the near future due to the shortage of pigeonholes on the market, thus an upcoming rise in pigeon hole prices.

Without these pigeonholes to categorize and subcategorize each of the markets, it's nearly impossible to review products and find which products fits which people.

  • stationwagons?

    really?

  • You guys are way over thinking this. Pure fact is everyone sucks. Mac users and pc users alike.

  • Hahahahaha!

  • What the heck? Ummm...

  • wow, most unnecessary study ever. couldn't be more obvious. (I'm a pretentious mac owner :) )

  • I made the switch over to Mac last year after much prodding by friends, family and colleagues. I have to say I am loving my new Macs, not that I didn't enjoy my PC experience, but it's nice knowing I can run any software made for a Mac, Windows and Linux, and remain virtually virus free.

  • I dont spend money on things like music and going green because I want to buy a new gaming PC with a new nvidia 9 series card...
I wanna play games - can a mac do that?

  • HA HA HA HA HA!!! These types of stories are the funniest.

  • @quikboy: 93% of the world has their priorities straight, well computer wise anyway

  • Stationwagon? does anyone make them anymore? i mean i am sure since the MAC users drive them they must be new ones, becuse they would never drive an old beater that pollutes ....

"admit it gustav, your a stinking OS/2 user"

  • @Zlevee: That was great.

  • If I'm a PC user who longs for a Mac on the side does that make me a wanabe or social climber?

  • Station wagons rock! You can fit all your sh** and still get decent gas mileage. The lower center of gravity also makes for better handling than trucks. What's not to love?
As for my Mac fanboyism, yeah I think I made a better decision. All I hear from my PC using friends is how often it breaks down and windblows needs reinstalled or de-virused or de-adwared. I get work done and I can't join the complaining-bout-my-computer crowd.

  • 69% computer users are assholes.
87% notebook users are pompous bastards.

    using computers:
98% Mac users think they are the better than regular people. about 15% are.
40% Windows users think they are better than regular people. about 25% are.
90% Linux users think they are better than regular people. about 70% are.

80% of the regular people think computer people are geeks and nerds. about 30% computer people are.

  • @daversW: That simply isn't true. What is true is that Greenpeace constantly berates them. They've even stated that they go after Apple moe than other tech companies whoa re much worse because Apple is an industry leader.

  • You guys, lets face it: This video is a complete hoax. Mac users are obviously better than PC users, as well as better individuals overall in intelligence, elegance, and usefulness. The only reason why PC users ever counter this point is because they are insanely jealous of their mac counterpart, and would like to be just like them but knows deep down that they are too retarded to ever be that superior. In fact, I propose that we should kill off every PC user in order to both shut down M$ and advance further into becoming greater beings.

    /sarcasm

  • In other news when asked about their respective lifestyle choice of using a Mac vs. PC, Mac users emphatically resound their praise for their unique path of virtue through their devices.

PC users quizzically state, "why the hell would my computer define who I am?"

  • As a user of both Mac and Windows, I can say I get approached by more ladies for a conversation when using Apple stuff than with a windows pc. there's that geek/pervert stigmata related to windows. and buying Apple shows that you spend more money for the same stuff and you care a lot more about appearance and probably pay with credit cards. in the end, it's all about getting some tail.

  • @corhou99: they might be considering all hatchbacks station wagons... I drive a Golf and would sort of considering it a station wagon. The term "station wagon" just has a bad conotation I think.

My 2 cents on this video: it's pretty spot on. Sure, it isn't true for all mac/pc owners, but it definitely speaks to many of the trends I've seen... not all of which are bad.

(coming from a PC and Mac user that appreciates both)

  • @shiftyeyedgoat: "PC users quizzically state, "why the hell would my computer define who I am?" "

yeah, he would rather spend time questioning how to get rid of the pimples on his ass...
