The HD DVD Promo group was dissolved today, its ashes scattered on the Island of Dead Formats. After a moment of silence, make your way to Best Buy to claim your $50 and trade in your obsolete plastic—or soak up the cheap HD goodness—if you haven't already. [HD DVD Promo Group, Thanks Mack!]

Man, people would say Betamax was dead, but just last month, I saw a Betamax player on an US Airways flight...
HD DVD is just taking a break... it will be back!

What, no re-direct to the Blu-ray Promotion Group? How strange.
@Joseph: I dunno... Those look like 8mm tapes to me.
Universal's EVP of marketing, Ken Graffeo has also stepped down. He was head of the HD DVD promotional group. Supposedly he's still at Universal but it wouldn't surprise me if departs shortly.
I cant see this as being a giant surprise to anyone in the BD/HD-DVD know.
@ripfire4: The player actually says Hi8. Which was successful despite Sony's magic touch.
As this dies, somewhere on the internet a special group is preparing a 30 year mission to not let this go and always talk at parties about how
"really dude, HD/DVD was the better format, such a shame it lost, come by my house I have the Bourne Series in what I feel is the clearest presentation ever made."
Heh, I just got some of my 5-free HD-DVDs today in the mail.
so why would we need the HD shades then?
*skeptic*
Blu-ray. Your time is limited too. The spectre of downloads looms.
@Joseph: Um it even says video Hi8 on the player!!! its 8mm :) betamax is deader than dodos.
@Joseph:
That's a Hi8 player, the format that had it's last gasp the day DV came out. Guess the airlines must have made a big investment 15 years ago since it still seems standard on most planes that don't have on demand services.
(((Taps playing))) RIP HD-DVD, no matter what HD Source I watch, you will always be loved and hold a special place in my heart.....
Now for a bottle of Tequilla to wash down my sorrows....
@lucky_you:
i doubt it, i honestly don't think downloads will be that great. There are parts of the us where there is only dail up. Besides, I prefer to have an actual physical disc and with my PS3, life is good. now if only metal gear solid can be release faster.
@lucky_you: I agree! Downloads on Apple TV are great!
Those cocksuckers never sent me my 5 free HD DVDs.
@lucky_you: Downloads have a long long long time to go. Dont hold your breath. Lets say another 4 or 5 years.
@matto:
You didn't miss out on much.
I'd be happy to send you my copies of The Hulk, Babel, Black Rain and The Frighteners. But I'm keeping Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
@matto: Are you sure you didn't wait long enough? 3 months (to the day) for my first set, 3 months and a week for my second, and I just sent out my third. I expect to receive nothing for that.
John Moreau here.
I would love to visit the Island of Dead Formats. Just seeing all those cassettes, VHS tapes, Minidiscs, Super8 films, Betamax, etc. really brings back the memories...
@Lizard_King: Huh, I sent mine in the middle of January. Maybe they'll come this month. I also didn't bother with the rebate when I picked up an xbox360 hd dvd drive for $50.
@matto: Hey, it's free. I sent in one when I got the FYE deal ($50 for HD-DVD unit, $30 FYE MIR, 5 free discs). I figure I'll hock half of them on Ebay and get my $20 for the unit. You can still sent it in (have it postmarked by tommorow)
@Garrison Dean: Ha!
Hallelujah!!! Ding dong the bitch is dead
Someone didn't get the memo...

HD DVD no longer exists, never will exist and has never existed. Got that? ...if we hear further mention of the existence of HD DVD, we WILL be paying you a visit. Understood?
*Homeland Security van pulls away*
@wizardofpants: Thanks... for that...
@Joseph: totally not a beta deck.
@ripfire4: @malcs: Thanks for helping me out. haha at first I thought it was the black box :).
@firesign: Yeah they pointed that out. I'm young and I've never seen one before, so thats what I immediately though it was.
I still can't believe how lucky I am I sold my HD-A3 on EBAY not 7 days prior to the fall of HD-DVD! FINALLY! Ahead of the curve! I bet that EBAY buyer is pissed.
@bigMoneyMIKE:
HD Lite FTL! No thanks, I want REAL HD.
As soon as Warner announced going blu back in January, I knew things would end quickly for HD-DVD. But it is still strange to watch this utterly complete collapse. To know that SO much energy and $$$$$$ was put into HD-DVD, then to watch it burst into nothing but ashes... it's just strange.
gizmdo your writing blows, i can imagine a year from now you will still have posts dedicated to the failure of hd-dvd. Is sony flying you guys out to japan and getting you laid?? wtf.
trade in hahaha, never bought HD DVD products...even a fool could see Blu-ray was the was going to win. Ouch...what does that say about the people who bought HD DVD players.
@ Roopy LMFAO your so right. Can Gizmodo please find other topics to write about. Its not like "Oh dont like what Gizmodo writes about then go to another technology blog." Just stop whoring this HD DVD vs blu-ray topic to death. As you can see from my above comment there is nothing intelligent left to say about the HD DVD/Blu-ray topic, its been done to death
Best up-converting regular DVD player on the market...and such a value too.
I got 2 PS3 but they can only play Code 3 Disc (Singapore, Asia), so I need a new DVD Player that can be hacked into playing multi-code, should I buy a HD-DVD since they are dirt cheap and upscale my others DVDs ???
