It may not be as challenging as climbing some of the great peaks of the Himalayas, but the AquaClimb is a hell of a lot warmer and safer than a mountain—plus it offers up a great upper body / core workout. The fiberglass panels include hand-sculpted rock features and the ability to be rotated 90 degrees or even reconfigured to customize the level of difficulty. There is even a a non-slip, textured surface, interchangeable handholds and a 10 degree angled design to ensure saftey. I just wouldn't be following right behind that kid in the red trunks if you want to survive. Available for a whopping $8,000. [Hammacher Schlemmer and AquaClimb via BornRich]

Even though it looks totally awesome, I have a feeling it's too dangerous to be considered a viable option for public pools.
And by that, I mean if it tips over, somebody dies.
And I'm pretty sure public pools are the market for this.
Because if you've got 8k to blow on a rock climbing wall for your private pool, screw you.
Thats awesome!
Too bad insurance would be extremely costly...
This would be awesome if I didn't like actual rock so much more than gym climbing. Still if I had a pool I'd be in for one.
Spraining and slipping. Ouch!
Dude. Why you gotta bag on the kid in red? He's... working the crowd.
Ladies and gentlemen, please do not try this at home.
@Polywhirl:
that should be shortened to "if you've got a private pool, screw you."
Why not just cover every internal and external wall and ceiling in your house with these panels?
I want one. NOW. It's all the workout I ever need - rockclimbing *and* swimming together!
@newgalactic: You want to know why not, newgalactic?
you really want to know?
Because it would be awesome as hell.
Just what you want before climbing a rock wall, wet hands and feet????
@Polywhirl:
Actually they have something similar in a public bath here in Norway where I come from, and last time I checked it has not caused any deaths yet. Might have been some small injuries, but that's just a good learning experience!
*Goes off to rant about "kids these days are overprotected" and "when I was a kid, everything was much better and there was snow in the summer and we broke our bones at least every saturday"*
Mount a bunch of jug holds ([en.wiktionary.org]) on it and have a dyno contest.
+ Watch video
@pagercam:Yeah, that would make it difficult.
@pagercam:
to top it off, someone should spray the climber with the garden hose as they're going up.
Any teenage boy is going to sport wood watching his female (and perhaps male) peers climb the wall. This is a horrible cruel idea.
@willyolio: Add the water canon and it is either from Double Dare or the next American Gladiator challenge.
I want video of the 8-foot, back flopping dismount.
@humorbot:
I'm really not up on my urban slang. Is "bag on" similar to "harsh on" or "hate on"?
I bet they already have this installed at the Playboy mansion pool!
@willyolio: What's wrong with having a pool? Are you jealous? You must live in Alaska or something...
[maps.google.com]
(no, I don't live there, it's just a random spot near Phoenix illustrating how common pools are in this state)
if it were clear.. its like girls giving a car wash while you sit in the car and watch!
@DeadWriter:
If the chick climbing the wall in the picture is the same age as her peers in line, I am a very bad man. :\
@Polywhirl: @fosho4: It's probably not much more dangerous than the water slides, diving boards, etc. already installed in public pools. If you fall off the thing, you're going to hit the water. I doubt it would tip over; it's likely bolted to the pool deck. Like the diving boards and the water slide, I'm sure the lifeguards would have a "one-or-two at a time" rule.
Having said that, I'd hate to see one of these at my local pool. My weak-ass upper body barely has the strength to pull me up onto the deck, let alone into the air!
One of the rules that determine whether or not something is awesome is "if you screw up on it, you fall into water."
So excluding any exceptionary rules (heh) ... this is awesome.
these are old. the idea of it coming to consumers mighr be new, but a rec center close to my house has had one for years now.
They alwys need that one fat, pale, out of place kid in the pics! lol.
I want one.
A pool to put it in would also be nice.
Seriously, looks like a lot less hassle than the usual climbing harness do.
@man_in_gauze: At least you won't be lonely. There's room in hell for the both of us.
If you wanted to be mean, you could set it up in the shallow end and invite all the neighborhood brats over to give it a try ;)
Deep Water Bouldering has been huge for the last few years (out in the real world). This is a playskool version of the real thing. I am not impressed. And the price is just plain scary ridiculous. I could outfit a whole rock gym with all the holds they would need for some time on $8000.
This Aquaclimb is located at the Lakefront Park of/in Grosse Pointe Woods, MI. It's fun, it's tough, the falls can be dramatic but you are "falling" back into 13' deep water. The only unfortunate thing is it's placement in the diving well has taken one of the 1 meter boards out of service.
Follow the link to other pics from Lakefront Park. The dual-run waterslide that is partially shown is over three stories tall !
[www.gpwmi.us]
The main pool has two 50 sections, with one being over 7' deep and can divided into 25 and 50 meter lanes for races, water polo, etc..

Yes, I am a proud resident of Grosse Pointe Woods, MI.
theres been something like this a pool near my house for the past 2 years
Falling into water can be quite painful - water's like concrete if you hit it fast enough. It lacks sufficient "give". If you really want to try, do a belly-flop off the high-dive board.
Falling in this thing won't hurt so much, but it will hurt...
