Holy butt-clencher, Batman! Quake 3 Arena has somehow found itself ported to the iPhone. Details are thinner than my scalp is on hair, but the video clearly shows a networked game going on in full swing. You may be thinking this sounds semi-neat, but let me tell you this; the game uses the freaking accelerometer for direction control, while shooting is done simply by tapping on the touchscreen. Now, I'm off to collapse in a euphoric pile, you check out the video and then do the same. There's no word on the release yet, but hopefully it will show up somewhere once I am out of my aforementioned, euphoric pile state. We'll keep you posted. [Crunchgear]

If this is real then it's very cool indeed.
Its not cool. Its fan-freaking awesome!!!!!!
Accelerometer based movement is harder than anything ever. at least when everytime you move the screen, you cant see it as well anymore.
Ahh here we go... now we are getting this iPhone ball rolling. First they enable corp e-mail, then Open GL. The capabilities on this device are only really limited by current technology. The platform is solid. Now if they could just figure out a way to get MMS on there cuz I'm tired of e-mailing all my friends pictures.
how do you jump?
I'll call BS...for now... This is probably a synced up video like the scam company that "released" a Flash port which turned out to be nothing but a fake video being played on the iPhone.
Tap to shoot? Unplayable.
Unplayable but totally awesome nonetheless
Looks like normal Quake maybe Quake 2 to me, not Quake 3 arena?
@foureight84: Throw the phone in the air :)
@greasypigstudios:
Yeah, I thought that as well.
Too cool to be real! OMG man if it's true I'll buy one iPod Touch tomorrow!
Nice! Where can I download that!
@Mr. Black: Um... they had Spore running on this thing... Quake 3 shouldn't be a problem.
How about joystick accessory? Better yet, full size keyboard and mouse!
@Joseph:
Technical demo != Retail game
So, can anyone who can be arsed find out if this is real or not?
@greasypigstudios:
weapons to the side, not quake 1.
floating ammo boxes not quake 2.
Look at the related videos, all videos of sluts and stuff.
@The Lab:
and then they could replace the i with eee.
oh wait.
Why couldn't he have handed the second iThing over to the cameraman to play?
As Borat says: Very Nice.
@chiablo: Cause thats just stupid.
"So are you ambidextrous?"
"I want to see a rocket hit your face."
Sounds like a porno to me.
Oh... so that's where John Biggs went after he left Gizmodo? Crunchgear.. hmm!
I have a bit of mixed feelings about this. On one hand I'm happy to see people waking up to the reality of what phones can do and have been able to do for years - outside the USA, where things are generally stuck in 1995 when it comes to mobile tech. On the other hand I'm a bit sad to see people have the impression that the iPhone is first in this or even that this must be a fake (because no way could anyone do this). This has been on other devices for quite some time now! There's nothing new or awe-inspiring except for the fact that the iPhone can finally do it too - after being out for almost a year.
Quake for Windows Mobile:
+ Watch video
Quake for Symbian, S60 (e.g. Nokia phones):
+ Watch video
God, this makes me feel old.
But...but they skipped...they skipped QUAKE 2???
You daffy bastards.
I know, I know, multiplayer blah blah BLEH.
Call me when it's Enemy Territory: Quake Wars.
-or Enemy Territory!
:)
They need to use one finger to move, tilt for POV update, and a second, multi-touch finger to shoot.
"On one hand I'm happy to see people waking up to the reality of what phones can do and have been able to do for years - outside the USA, where things are generally stuck in 1995 when it comes to mobile tech."
HarHar, like China, Japan and Europe where modile tech is beyond US and the fact that a few years back people was playing tetris and pacman on their phones.
I don't see any phone running Quake3 other than iPhone.
Guess ill just leave your quite unserious quote stand out for it self.
this is the first thing that makes me want an iphone.
I don't see why this would be fake, I saw Quake 3 running on an n95 months ago, stands to reason now the iphone should be able to with opengl being added.
Still doesn't make me want one though, need 3g and a decent camera yet
Yeah it's cool to see it running on a phone... But it's unplayable for all intents and purposes. Tilting the unit to move and tapping the screen to fire? Sounds frustrating to me. Port some usable games in and we'll see.
So... is it real or not?
Answers on the back of a postcard please.
I'd install this just so when somebody gives me shit about lack of apps on the iPhone I could bust out Quake 3 on them.
