The Gizmodo reader meetup happened on Saturday at Alpine Meadows and we had a great time. The snow was soft, the gadgets were plentiful, the beer flowed and no one fell on their head except Joe, who got a black eye when he face planted on the first run. The photos above were uploaded on Nokia N95s to a central share. I didn't upload many, but I did spend most of my day fiddling with a Zune preloaded with songs to ride to.
Most people were from around the bay area, Reno and Tahoe area, but Christian came all the way from Dallas. And Mike Zhao, only 16, spent I think his milk money to afford the trip. And then Randy, ski patrol at Alpine, gave us a pretty good tour of the place. About 50 people came in total everyone was the type of person I'd hang out with outside of work. I'd always said that gadgets aren't just for nerds, and here was the proof.
Of course, special thanks go to Kevin from JBL, Brian from Zune, Joe from Nokia, Mike from Olympus, Derek from SPOT, Greg from Smith Optics, Racheal from Alpine and Hagen from Vudu for giving away prizes.
We'll do it again next year! If you came and took photos, send em over so I can upload em.
P.S. Brian from Zune has some skills on the snowboard!

Man, looks like fun.
Let's see a get together in NYC!!!!
Damn, wish i could have gone. We could have had a party at my cabin in South Lake!
Sweet! We should set up something in NYC... BBQ at my place? Anyone?
I would love to go to one of these if it was in the baltimore area, or even NYC during break
So what kept people from walking off with those Nokia n95s cause i totally would have went to the bathroom and never returned ;)
Maybe I could make it next year. That would be sweet...or did it say dude on my back?
Please do, Blam-I was really disappointed that I couldn't go this year. Next year will be a must! Any excuse to go to the snow...
Any identification of commenters in the photos? I'm curious.
I would absolutely do NYC; however, I'm not going to any of your houses. I don't trust you. Any of you.
East Coast reprezent! Yuh Yuh!
I'd be up for something in the logical area of PA, e.g. New York, at some point, as long as i am given fair warning.
I'm moving back to Santa Cruz from LA this summer, so I'll be stoked to go next year.
/just watch... next year it'll be at Mammoth.
another vote for NYC! we have booze here too!
Thats a pretty cool Zune!
It was awesome, except that:
1. I didn't win anything
2. I never saw blam on the slopes
3. I'm not even in any of the pictures
But the croissants were pretty good, so I guess it was worth it.
Lots of fun was had. It was a pleasure meeting all the Gizmodo crew and even hosting a bunch of them. The new toys from Smith, Microsoft, Nokia et al were fun to play with. The weather was perfect and the snow was amazing.
I was very impressed with all the flatlanders who agreed to hike High Traverse with me. I expected 3-4 people to follow me when I said "hike," it was more like 15. I wasn't sure Nut Bastard's lungs were going to survive it, but everyone made it to the summit and we all had a buttery corn descent to Sherwood. Once was enough for most, but Gregg from Smith made a second lap with me. Speaking of which, the new Smith goggles are sweet. Great field of vision and a pretty cool lens swapping system.
The pictures are fun. 92LeSabre: Lots of pics of Linda (Wil must have had one of the N95s all day). I'm in a couple (helmet, red beard, black jacket and name badge on my backpack strap - oops, I'm not supposed to wear a name badge when I'm not working - oh well). Blam has camo pants on.
Another vote for NYC :D
@bobmarley101:
ditto on 1, 2, and 3. But it was still great fun, although I'll contend that almost winning something is worse than not winning anything at all.
All in favor for a NYC "Giz-Fest" Say I... Tel me... Why doesn't that sound right? GIZ-FEST-NYC!

Those croissants were awesome. I didn't win anything, I had #85 and they called every number in the 80s except mine. Oh and btw I'm the guy holding his skis up in the group shot.
Haha looks like fun.
Btw, did I miss out on the Nacski bus ride? I'm going to smack myself if I did.
saw nutbastard live, in person. he's about 5'7" and looks like his photo, wears baggy clothes.
i'm the guy in the rasta beanie and blue jacket
Snow's looking pretty thin down there - should have had it up in Seattle. I skied 10" powder Sunday and over a foot the weekend before!
to those of you who are saying that the meetup should've been elsewhere, the reason it was in Tahoe is because that is where Blam has his ski cabin; also, a good chunk of the writers live within driving distance of Tahoe (same with the readers)
That Zune really looks neat.
does anyone have an idea what camera was used to take those pictures? they came out really nice! no over exposure even with all the bright snow! thanx!!
except for that one right there* ... hahaha
Another vote for an NYC get together. Might be a little late for snowboarding. Has anyone been to 230 Fifth in the city? Has a rooftop bar and can hold more than a few (~1000) Giz readers.
@nEmmY: nokia N95's so they were all taken by cameraphones!
It was really nice skiing too! I was one of the four swedes, the short one.
@AqueousBeef:
you son of a bitch im six foot one!
It was a really nice weekend. Lots of fun and enough of snow. I was one of the four swedes, the short one.
Boy i get back from driving 600 miles and the little squirt is already spreading lies!
Or perhaps im taller than the tallest person in his family, who is 5'6", so i MUST be 5'7"
Aqueous - you're on my list!
what, no Chicago love? C'mon- we can all go t.p. Dailey's house! Open call for all stealth gadgets has been placed.
What do you mean gadgets aren't just for nerds? You guys all went to a ski resort to play with gadgets. That's page 2 of the definition of nerd.
It does sound like it would have been fun though. Did they have marshmallows in their cocoa?
My face is already peeling, I got so burnt. Never again will I spring ski without sunscreen.
@nutbastard: haha, o yeah, I forgot. He's also 200 lbs of pure muscle and has a tattoo on the back of his neck that says "Bad Ass Mutha Fucka"
*cough* Bunny hill. Was anybody their actually any good? Or did most of them come for the gadgets?
@AqueousBeef:
No theres a tatoo on my forehead that says "POOR IMPULSE CONTROL"
@jakster4u:
I came for the snowboarding, and i tore the shit out of that mountain. The n95s and the zunes were pretty craptastic.
