Nintendo Releasing NEW White GameCube Controller

Why Nintendo's releasing a new wired controller after they discontinued the wonderful wireless WaveBird is unknown to us, but Japan will be able to get a brand new white gamepad for about 2000 yen, or $20 this month. Like most things Nintendo, it'll take a few months to get to the States (if it even does). Looking at the sales numbers of Smash Bros. Brawl makes it seem likely that it will. • Why is it not wireless?

Why is it so awkwardly designed?

  • Nintendo capitalizing on something they did 8 years ago? Such things are unheard of and I will not stand for your slander monsignor.

  • Why is it the worst possible color for filthy americans?

  • Is this to go along with a GameCube update or something? LOL

  • 3m cable? That's significantly longer than the old GC controller cable. That's something.

  • @Darrone: that's actually the original design for the Gamecube controller. That doesn't answer your question at all, but at least shuffles the blame back a handful of years or so. I do need more GC controllers since the Classic controller for the Wii is garbage and SSBB practically requires something other than a Wiimote, but I kinda wish they'd make a controller like this wireless. It seems the wire is always about a foot too short and I end up having to lean forward so as not to yank the Wii out of the entertainment center.

  • @Darrone: Awkwardly designed? It's a reissue/recolor of the standard GameCube controller (which was meant to be more ergonomic than the old Super-Nintendo-inspired controllers everyone else uses).

  • You'd think they would have duct-taped two Gamecube controllers together instead.

  • This is probably because the Wii's white, so why not match brand spanking new GC controllers with the Wii to play such stellar games like Smash Bros Brawl?

  • Damn, I wish they just had a straight up USB edition, with no adapters. You are all HATERS! The Gamecube controller is one of the best designed controllers of all time. Plus if you have a shit ton of old ROMs like me, the Gamecube controller would make an excellent addition. Have you seen the state of PC controllers? They haven't gotten any cooler since the 90s. My old Sidewinder 6 button still p0wns on fighters and the dual shock is nice, but not necessarily the best choice for every game. Adapters are wanky.

  • Wavebird. Why no White wavebird (and add rumble!)

@emag: I'm well aware of this, having owned virtually every nintendo product i could get my hands on. My questions is WHY would you reissue an AWKWARD controller. It really has nothing going for it.

  • It probably plugs into the wiimote (the way that the Classic Controllers do), thereby making it wireless.

  • @Darrone: If any controller's awkward it's the classic controller. Those thumbsticks are a pain to use without hand grips like the Gamecube and other controllers.

  • JUST WHY?

  • @mrxcel: Just for the halibut.

  • Smash Brothers is way better to play on the Gamecube controller than the Wiimote. With people getting bigger screens, the longer cable makes sense. White, because the Wii is white. Nintendo wants to cash in on the Smash Brothers buzz.

  • hopefully it just plugs into the wii-mote a la the classic controller. that would be ideal/

  • @Darrone: It's only awkward if you look at it for 3rd party stuff. Nintendo doesn't design their controllers for 3rd party games anymore, they design controllers for their games (more specifically Miyamoto's games).

  • @arkowi: "hopefully it just plugs into the wii-mote a la the classic controller. that would be ideal/"

Agreed. It doesn't make sense to me unless it plugs into the Wii-remote. If it does, I think it's a great product. Right now, I *hate* playing Gamecube games on my Wii because it results in cords all over my living room.

  • @Darrone: funny the Gamecube controller is considered one of the best controllers out there along with the Playstation and Nintendo 64.

  • Yay. Lego Controller is back.

  • Am I the only one who has no problem playing with the WiiMote and the nunchuck? I still manage to kick ass.

Well the Wii does support gamecube memory cards, so why not gamecube controllers?

  • @MagnoliaBoy:
Man I loved the Sidewinder controllers! I still have 2 parallel port ones. They were great for emu SFII battles.

  • Wake up, Nintendo! Can you say W-A-V-E-B-I-R-D? Wavebird. Wavebird. That's right, you can do it.

Why can't Nintendo figure it out? Look at the price Wavebirds are going for on eBay. You can't tell me the big N couldn't make a profit margin that even they would be happy with.

  • Good that the cable's long. Guess the realize the days of us 'kids' sitting on the floor playing with the console at our feet are over. You'd think they'd be able to do a bluetooth Wavebird.

Oh well, time to dig mine out and put fresh batteries in it. Almost Kart-in' time.

  • @Kaiser-Machead: Um, Wii does support gamecube controllers.

Either way, call me when they've got a bluetooth wavebird with force feedback, till then i'll stick to my "classic" wavebirds.

  • They should replace the Nintendo Gamecube logo on the controller with the Wii logo.

@bpatten: I didn't say it doesn't, I'm just saying "why not" in the same sense as "what the hell"

  • Picked up 3 wireless gamecube controllers a couple months ago. W00t

  • I just a copy of their sales forecast they project 5 units sold in Japan and 3 in the US... awesome...
Maybe they should also make the Game-cube an HD-DVD player with a Dial-up modem port to connect to the Nintendo BBS.. then they would rule ......

  • thank god. $20 would be a steal for those things. I bought some bargain 3rd party gamecube controllers off ebay (2 for $25) and after a week the rubber control stick has all but disintegrated. meanwhile the original gamecube controllers (the ones which i played melee on and now brawl) are still working perfectly.

i would also like to add that the gamecube controllers are probably the most ergonomic controllers i have ever used. my only gripe is that they could be a tad larger.

  • I don't understand why everyone seem so perplexed by this.

Wii has far outsold the Gamecube. Therefore, there are many Wii owners that never had Gamecubes and thus don't own Gamecube controllers (which is the best controller for Brawl).

Selling a wired version is the cheapest way to get one in the hands of this large group of people.

  • It's too have a matching color for the Wii. Duh.

  • Please Nintendo, make a Wavebird with rumble! If Sony could do it why not you?

  • I vote with the others. Nintendo, BRING BACK THE WAVEBIRD! Best console controller of all time. Period.

A Bluetooth Wavebird with rumble would be a no-brainer smashing success.

  • Why a Gamecube controller? They don't even make that anymore or am I missing something?

  • @ab3: Read my comment above.

  • Let me answer most of your questions asks.

    Q: Why white?
A: To match the Wii white color.

    Q: Why a Gamecube controller?
A: 'cause the controller is well design, why change something that is great. Look at the PS1, PS2 and PS3 controller... the shape is nearly or even the same between each console. Also they don't have to invest a great amount of money to design a new controller that could potentially fail. (they make more money this way... everyone is happy)

    Q: Why?
A: Because game like Super Smash Brothers Brawl, were actually design for the GameCube Controller. I played to much Super Smash Brother Melee that on of my controller is analogue stick got loose. It needs to be replaced. I tried the other configurations and like all review sites... it is hard to control. The Wiimote is not design for fighting games. So, as more fighting games gets released (not form Nintendo) that fail due to horrible controls, can actually be fine with the GameCube Controller. They just need to actually support it.

    Q: Why a wire?
A: Nintendo already has the classic controller, which they want still to sell. So it could be a reason.

    Q: Why a 3m long wire.
A: I use my Game Cube controller for my Wii, and like when I was playing on the GameCube, you have to pull out the console pretty close to you, from the TV, so that the controller can barely reach you. Even with the stand, form gaming excitement I can't tell you how many time the Wii fell, or keeps jumping (same with GameCube) from one side to another when it is flat on a multilayer game.
I got some GameCube controller extension cords to resolve the issue. So now, you don't need to try and battle your self to find these extension cord, as those third party company also stop producing them as the GameCube controller is not produced anymore.

  • wow, if they ditch the wire, and bring it to the US they got a sale.

  • Are most of you struggling to understand that it's just a gamecube controller with a 3m long cable? That's all. It's not wireless, it doesn't plug into the wii remote and it doesn't blend.
