There is no question that having a bunch of separate remotes is downright annoying, but it seems to be the norm in most households. In fact, I would be willing to bet that the vast majority of Americans have at least 2 or 3 remotes lying on their coffee table at this very moment. But let's open this question up a bit and expand it to the entire house. Not including game controllers, how many remotes to you have in your home?

Do Wiimotes count?
One for playstation 2
one for living room tv
one for yamaha receiver
one for bedroom tv
one, and its made my apple
I included Apple Remotes, one for my iMac and one for my MacBook. But without that, it's 4. However, I bought the Logitech Universal Remote for Xbox 360. I use that to control the TV, DVR, Audio Receiver and Xbox 360. Here's a tip: I found it about $20-30 cheaper at GameStop than it was priced everywhere else.
I have a shitload of remotes around the house...
but i usually use about 3-4 regularly... when i can find the damn things
@Illusive: Good question. It looks like a remote, so it fits from that perspective. But it is used for videogames, which means it maybe should not. I think this is more of a philosophical question that you will need to explore.
Another question: How many remotes do the commenters here force your family to use at your 'entertainment center'? In theory, everyone in Giz land should have a single remote, but I suspect there are a few that have not completely plunged into eradicating the 5,000 remotes throughout their home.
I've been agonising over whether or not to get a universal remote recently.
-Somehow it seems counterintuitive to pay ~£100 to have *another* bloody remote in my life.
How many do I have or how many do I use? Do XBox Controllers Count?
Not counting those I have about 16 remotes. But I use about 4 (1 per room really)
Harmony 880 does most of the work. I have an extra (the original) remote at my desk for lighting.
6 that I actually use, 1 universal for home theater (many more if I used each individually), 1 PS3 bluetooth remote, 2 for upstairs TV & DVD/VCR combo, 1 for my iHome iPod thing, 1 for living room stereo
@RedSeven:
Harmony 555 is around £40
Does everything i need it to…
[except RF for my sockets and BT the PS3. The IR2BT will soon fix the PS3 issue though.]
Cable
VCR
Audio
DVD player
DVD recorder
CD player
I used to have one for the TV, too, but it's long since joined that Radio Shack in the sky...
@ideaman2020: Yeah. I'm old school...
Harmony 880 ftw.
With a Schmartz PS3 IR port it has enough functionality for me.
GF wasn't too hot on it at first, but now I have it set up right, it controls everything.
I have one Harmony 676 and that's it. Love it.
The poll's a little flawed, hard to tell if you want raw controller numbers or controllers that are actually used regularly. I put 1, since I use my Harmony Remote and that's it. But I really have like 6.
VCR - 1
DVD - 1
TV - 1
Audio Deck - 1
Home Theater system - 1
Cable set top box - 1
PC TV tuner - 1
Divx player - 1
(new addition) popcorn hour - 1
Total = 9
I used to have 5, but now I just have my Harmony remote (660 or 670 can't remember)
Have or use? Like Graffiksguru I also roll with the Harmony. The Advanced IR/RF one. GD thing rocks. From taking care of the plasma that is framed so it has to be run RF to IR and run up, to lighting control via zwave. If I could have it start my Volcano Vap id be happier. And I think thats an option.
2 - My 360 Media Remote and DVR remote.
@Illusive:
I don't think the wiimote counts since it doesn't really emit infrared. In fact it's actually the opposite. And I wouldn't count the Bluetooth capability as remote.
...And then there was ONE! Got one of those Logitech Harmony 550's and absolutely love it. I highly recommend it to anyone with more then two remotes.
Oh Jeez...
Living room TV
Living Room DVD
Living Room Tivo
Stereo
VCR
Universal Remote (not totally universal)
Garage TV
Bedroom TV
Bedroom Tivo
Bedroom DVD
Celing fan
Dining room speakers
Wow...I think I have a problem.
just one lovely logitech harmonix
The one to the right and a STB IPTV controller are the only ones I use regulary. A/C and computer DVB-T remotes are used once a year.
I've got my Harmony Remote & I'll never give it up.
Three.
Add me to the Harmony camp. I was a bit wary when my spouse wanted to buy one but now I am in love. Now, we give our old remotes to the baby to play with.
Way too many remotes. that is until I got a Harmony 880. However one of my dogs got over excited and chewed up my 880 a couple of weeks ago so I was forced to get myself a new Harmony "One".
Best remote ever.
The harmony remote doesn't work with the PS3 though, right? If it does I'll run out and get one tonight...really, that's the only thing keeping me from buying one, the idea that I have a Universal remote that works with everything EXCEPT...
I said 2... but that's because I have a programmable remote that handles all my IR devices and then I have an RF remote for my HTPC. Without the multi remote I'd have 4. Actually, I also have a BT keyboard that I use with the HTPC, does that count? If counting all remotes in the house, used or unused I have 3-shitton.
Sorry, Sean, but you get a big D- with this poll. :) It seemed clear to me that the poll was asking how many remotes total are in our home. But, many are answering based on the one remote they use. I have '11 or more', but we only use one remote, so that really will effect the voting quite dramatically without clarity.
One,for my 28 year old Teneka. Oh, and one for the 50" Samsung Plasma.
I have a PC run though the 50" and do all my movie watching on there. Does a wireless keyboard count?
I have 1 Harmony remote 880 downstairs for my home theatre and one Sony RM-AX4000A (brick) for my bedroom. I think the Sony sucks but it's easy to find in bed when things get crazy. The 880 is a great remote and easy to use.
To everyone... I don't think they were asking about other types of remote controls. But if they are, I don't use a whole lot of remotes that came with each electronic peice of equipment I own including my creative speakers on my computer, my windows media TV remote, my 2 car remote controls for my house, my ceiling fan remote controls, my remote controls to the 5 remote control cars me and my kids own, my remote to my remote control plane, etc... we could go on and on! Geeezzzz.
@ideaman2020: Oh, yeah. I have one for the cassette deck, too. But who counts that..?
Personally I have one.
It's a Sony uber-remote I got a few years back as a gift and it's great.
Too complex for my wife, however, so she sits there with all the individual remotes because she's more comfortable that way.
I just got a Harmony 880. Greatest remote I've ever owned! I can't believe I waited so long.
@Monty: The word "have" should make it pretty clear.
My Harmony 880 has replaced all but the PS3 Bluetooth remote.
DVD - 1
Apple - 2
VCR - 1
TiVo - 3
PS3 - 1
XBox360 - 1
TV - 3
Stereo Receiver - 2
Clock Radio - 2
Nineteen...OMG! Each of these dang things has it's own remote and most work with nothing else...

@Islandkiwi:
Search for "IR2BT"
it is a small device that accepts IR commands and outputs Blue tooth.
JUST ONE BIG ONE!
Three Remotes for the Elven-kings under the sky,
Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone,
Nine for Mortal Men doomed to die,
One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne,
In the land of Mordor where the shadows lie.
One Remote to rule them all, One Remote to find them,
One Remote to bring them all, and in the darkness bind them,
In the land of Mordor where the shadows lie.
Hmm... Good question...

Got one of the Harmony 550 on amazon for $50 and loving it.
I thought it says "not including game controllers"...
I have a Logitech Harmony One and I absolutely love it. While it is a little expensive at $250, it has absolutely changed the way I use electronics. For example, pressing the "Watch TV" button on the touchscreen turns on my TV, my receiver, my cable box, and adjusts the volume. If I press "listen to music", it shuts everything else off and turns on Front Row on my iMac!!
I only have 1 but its for my johnson, but actually thats untrue because Im lying.
@wage: dude the rock you just crawled from under called.... it said that the PS2-3 both have media remotes as well as the Xbox and Xbox 360... welcome to 2008
The only remote I have is actually for my camera.
I think most people on here are going to put 11 or more. I have 6 downstairs (TV, Xbox 360, HD-DVD, A/V receiver, CD changer, Media Center HTPC) but do not use them, I have a Niles Intellicontroller that controls
