Before the advent of the drive-through, families on road trips were stumped by the dilemma of how to have a hot meal ready at any time during their travels. But never fear, 1930s road warrior — hook up this automatic food cooking contraption to your exhaust pipe and your car will prepare your dinners for you!
The cooker, meant to be mounted on the rear bumper, contains a steam pressure kettle that gets heated by aromatic, flavorful hot exhaust. An hour's drive will yield you thoroughly cooked meats and vegetables, enveloped in the essence of leaded gasoline. Yum! [Modern Mechanix via Boing Boing]

I'm pretty sure this works like a heat exchanger, where the pipe goes THROUGH the cooker, without emptying INTO it... at least I sure as hell hope so!
Nothing like a little fresh CO to really bring out the flavor of your cookin!
Yeah, not even ignorance to health th flavor would have killed it.
Ive seen similar things setup for cross country vehicles and bikes, using a heat exchanger to heat up a vessel.
It's okay. People were too busy standing in soup lines to be able to go camping to their deaths.
Dude it IS a heat exchanger, read the body copy on the ad - "a steam pressure kettle which is heated by the hot exhaust gases" so unfortunately, no poison meals, lol

These are actually still fairly popular for long trips. Alton Brown had one made up for his motorcycle when they 1st did that road trip food show.
In the world of tomorrow, the woman of the house can be exhausted and still have all the energy and time to do what she wants.
Would you like some fries with your CO2 John?
It's also perfect for stoners. No longer will their marathon smoke out sessions end with a run to the A and P, because in the world of tomorrow, they can use the waste heat from the smoke out to cook a healthy meal.
Reminds me of Manifold Destiny

Making good food via this method is pretty exhausting.
@providehope: That idea's (engine block cooking)been around even longer. I remember reading about it as a kid in the 60's (probably in Popular Mechanics). The recipes called for cooking for so many miles per pound of meat, etc. I think you just wrapped the food in foil and hit the highway.
Wow, now you don't have to drive to the grocery store and then cook your meal.
With this device the entire road is a free grocery store.
I can't remember if it was posted here but there is a guy in Iran who is trying to patent something like this. Looks like he missed the boat by about 80 years.
In arctic places like in Alaska, some adventurers cook their food within their snowmobile/car's engine block when in use. Of course, they know better; they put their food in a sealed metal box.
Mommy, not only am I not learning, i'm forgetting stuff I used to know!
Definitely some MSM "journalism" here.
No the exhaust gasses did not d\touch the food.
And the idea of using engine heat to warm food is very old.
i remember this post a long time ago on here...
"Ron Popeil and George Foreman's Hybrid-Electric Car-B-Q Grill."
@GadgetPlay: Wow, I remember reading those too, my grandfather had a stash of PM and PS in his attic going back to 1939! I read em all, and clearly remember reading about this, it was quite a fad for a while. Some guys had it down to a science, using different areas of the engine for different temps, and cooking times.
What do you mean it wont work with my GM EV1.
These exist, there's even ones that fit on the exhaust of ATVs, snowmachines, etc. They are heat exchangers.
@DeadWriter: If you throw it into the desert scrap yard it's currently sitting in, it just might from being heated by the sun.
delicious!
